BEST MOVIES OF 2008:

2008 was not the best year for the film industry, still there were a few worth-watching releases. Unfortunately, I did not have much time to watch movies and failed to see a few titles which most probably would be on this list. Besides technically speaking, some movies are from 2007 but they were released in 2008 in Poland.

Winners:
- Slumdog Millionaire (UK/USA) – directed by Danny Boyle.
The last movie I’ve seen this year turns out to be the best one. Oops, Danny did it again! MUST-SEE!

- Cargo 200 / Gruz 200 (Russia) - directed by Aleksiej Balabanov
Absolutely devastating picture of USSR in the second half of 80’s. ANOTHER MUST SEE!

Others:
- Pineapple Express (USA) – directed by David Gordon Green
The best “buddy” action and drug comedy of the year.

- The Band’s Visit/ Bikur Ha-Tizmoret (Israel/France/USA) -
directed by Eran Korilin. Nice, uplifting and very funny comedy about a police band from Alexandria in Egypt lost in the small desert town in Israel. Give it a try!

- Import / Export (Austria) directed by Ulrich Seidl. My favorite Austrian director in top form again.

- Part of the Weekend never dies (UK/Belgium) – directed by Sam Farahmand. An honest and successful attempt at describing the phenomenon of the Dewaele Brothers and their Soulwax/2 Many Dj’s/ Nite Version stage performances.

- Edge of Heaven/Auf Der Anderen Seite des Lebens (Germany/Turkey/Italy)
- directed by Fatih Akin. Another gripping drama from the author of “Head-On”

- Gone Baby Gone (USA) - directed by Ben Affleck. The Affleck Brothers surprisingly captivating noir thriller.

- The Dark Knight (USA) - directed by Christopher Nolan.
Extremely overrated and overhyped and a bit disappointing blockbuster, although in its own genre definitely above the average. Heath Ledger – Yes Yes Yes, Christian Bale – Noooooooooo.

Finally, movies which deserve mentioning; I wish I had seen them in 2008, but did not have time or opportunity, yet: Troupe de Elite, Burn after reading, In the valley of Ellah, Encounters at the end of the world, Gomorra, Once, Battle for Haditha, Heavy Metal in Baghdad, Saturno Contro, Up the Yangtze, [REC], Jardins en automne.

Pineapple Express - Boski Chillout (+ Starkey mix)

English version below the Polish text

Główną rolę gra ulubieniec Apatowa, Seth Rogen, misiowaty aktor wprost stworzony do komedii o nieudacznikach i dziwakach. Partnerzy Rogena z filmu zdecydowanie dotrzymują mu kroku. Kolejny zabawny zawodnik dołączył do stajni Apatowa.

Starkey – Dark Nights and Street Bass (sprzed roku ale nadal kopie konkretnie).

------------------------------ English text --------------------------------

The end of the year is coming, it’s time to get ready for the party of the year (a totally overrated event in my opinion) and to the Day After. After the night frenzy at New Year’s Eve, we should be very careful about our ganglia, therefore for a typical day of coachpotatoing, instead of switching TV channels, I recommend a great, intelligent and very funny action comedy - Pineapple Express. This movie will definitely help you survive the worst moments of hangover, forget about headache and who knows, maybe even it will inspire some of you to use the medicine which is good for any illness.

I am a big fan of independent / avant-garde cinema, but recently I also happened to watch more mainstream stuff, and in this category the movies from the stable of an American producer, screen-writer and sometimes also a director - Judd Apatow – are what I REALLY LIKE. They are hardly outstanding achievements, however they usually do not fall below a certain level, unavailable to 99% of comedies made in Hollywood.

Pineapple Express is the best drug comedy I’ve seen for years. The main hero of
Pineapple express, Dale Denton, is a typical slacker, a marihuana addict, delivering court subpoenas and rulings for a living. Nevertheless, despite all the circumstances he is quite conscientious and at the same time very effective (and imaginative) worker. He somehow manages to smoke a few joints daily while driving his car, but as the saying goes: everything is for wise people. If you have fun at doing something and you can still function more or less within the perimeters of consensus reality – do it, because why not? Puritanism or War on Drugs are totally passé among the youth (I hope that at the time when the current youth grows up to become decision-makers, they will never forget this), and due to the fact that Apatow addresses his movies mainly to this particular social group, one cannot expect moral dilemmas or didactic lessons (God bless him). Kids won’t buy this, cause in USofA nobody is surprised by smoking of spliffs and practically half of the country smokes from children to heads of big corporations. Still, the latest installment of Apatow is surprisingly very incorrect politically and to some extent it even constitutes a kind of manifesto supporting legalization of soft drugz. For instance, the main hero being pretty stoned calls a local radio station to convince the host and listeners that the prohibition on weed smoking is totally obsolete relic. And you know what, I believe him! Of course the authors of Pineapple Express packed this message into a very neat, perfectly realized and what is most important very funny criminal plot and what is quite rare in this type of movies, everything seems to fit tightly and makes sense. At the end the action rushes faster than wind, but fortunately this does not resemble the ‘CGI slaughterhouse’ of Michael Bay, but rather a crazy pastiche like e.g. in British Hot Fuzz. It is clearly visible that the authors liked this part a lot, as they prolong it ad infinitum. Well, it works for me, and I believe that the viewers get – what is typical for this type of movies – some crazy shoot-outs, duels, surprising plot twists and on top of that a radiant smile never leaves their faces. When a yellow Daewoo Lanos entered the stage, I fell off my chair nearly rolling on the floor laughing!

There would have been no such effect without a great trio of (anti)heroes. The main part is played by the favorite actor of Apatow - Seth Rogen, an actor with teddy bear posture seems meant to play in comedies about losers and weirdos. Apart from that Rogen is a very talented screenwriter (
Pineapple Experss, Superbad), and gets a big plus from me for writing scripts for an American version of infamous "Da Ali G show" series, and one of his forthcoming projects is a movie about a superhero – Green Hornet and his faithful friend - Kato to be directed by Stephen Chow, i.e. my favorite author of crazy 'martial arts' comedies like Kung-Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer to name the best. Partners of Rogen in the movie are at least as good. James Franco plays Saul, Dale's dealer, and is very convincing in depicting a young guy who is stoned practically 24h a day and who mastered the art of sale and use of mary jane to perfection. A cross joint invented by him rulez! A third 'musketeer’ in this crazy story is played fantastically by Danny R.McBride'a, who portrays another dealer named Red. For me he is definitely the biggest discovery of this movie in terms of acting. Another funny guy joined the Apatow’s clique. I suggest you write down this name, he will be soon the talk of the industry.

And at last, I would like to draw you attention to two scenes, the first and the last one, which staple together the entire movie. I do not what to spoil their contents, but this is exactly this type of story-telling, sense of humor and insolent mocking of cinematic cannons that makes me love Apatow and his stable. I wish I saw more comedies in this vein in the future.
So, roll your spliffs and have fun!

As a bonus to this movie, I attach a mix which fits very nicely into the main theme of
Pineapple Express:

Starkey – Dark Nights and Street Bass (this mix is more than a year old but still kicks ass).
A Street-Bass crew from Philly has been actively promoting the message of the movie, it is enough to look at their party

Według słów jednej z osób zaangażowanych w projekt, przerósł on najśmielsze oczekiwania samych twórców jeżeli chodzi o ilość i jakość materiału.

----------------- English Version -----------------

Anechoic Chamber issued by Echodub is a very interesting initiative of a new collective on the scene, run by a young Alex vel DFRNT. He drew my attention a few months ago with his original mixes, then remixes and his own productions in which he combined – in a very ear-catching and hypnotizing way – heavy sub-bass sounds with ambient and chill-out structures on top (or below) IDM-like tunes. And what a news! A few months later DFRNT emerges as a spiritus movens of Echodub and serves a delicious takeaway for all the fans of intelligent electronic music, and in particular atmospheric dubstep (or should I call it dub-tech or if you wish tech-dub). This is real moving forward! This collective is absolutely on the right track. Maybe, the final effect is not breathtaking, but as a spacious background music, to be listened to when at work or doing your homework it sounds quite good. We should not forget that most of the musicians are fresh, young blood on the scene, from now on they can only improve.

According to one of the persons involved in the project, it outgrew the highest expectations of the authors themselves as regards the quantity and quality of the material. 14 producers presents 20 tracks, which more or less could be defined as intelligent dub-tech music. Honestly speaking, after the first news about this release, I have expected slightly tougher and more dubstep / dub oriented tunes. The more so, as the producers with whose work I am familiar, i.e. DFRNT, king slaFF, Sines, HxdB or a Polish representative in this group– Substep Infrabass, I clearly associate with dubstep, although it’s true that with its more atmospheric side. Unfortunately, selecting (deliberately or not) such a softer and more techno oriented convention has not been very successful looking across the entire compilation.

The release seems to be divided into two parts, a first one – calmer and more ambient and tech-dub oriented, unfortunately it is too monotonous and missing any tracks which would stay longer in memory. I have heard such tunes hundreds of times and apart from quite good production skills they lacked something original to which my ears would react with positive surprise. Unless, it was a deliberate intention – to create a kind of start-up to more interesting, darker and extended tracks in the second part which starts from one of the highlights of the release, namely the great tune Silent Q by HxdB. Later we have two solid tracks by king slaFF and IMHO the best track on this record, that is Test Four by Sines, atmospheric, fantastically building up ‘roller’ in a slightly oldschool style, with beautiful low bass and nu-jazz trumpet and piano plus suprising echo-vocal. A genuine Echo Dub! I am very pleased to note that one of the tracks which sound great among productions of several artists from across the world, is The Entity of our Polish producer Substep Infrabass. Dark mood, being his trademark, and an intriguing melody line would create a perfect background to some horror movie or a scene of landing of a spaceship on some virgin, unknown planet.

Unfortunately, the music by the mastermind behind the entire project, i.e. DFRNT on Echodub somehow have not convinced me. They sound too ambient and are not that original. Definitely, he can do more and I am sure that in the future he will deliver great music to listeners. Out of the artists who are completely new to me, it is worth mentioning Solar Constant and Foiledtorsos (coarse and raw Ultra Analog Dub). In general, in my opinion Anechoic Chamber is not a big music breakthrough, although the release has met with a very warm reception of listeners. Nevertheless, with all the drawbacks I have mentioned above, it is worth downloading this record and preferably listening to it in full while at the end appreciating the most important feature of this production IMHO, namely an authentic inspiration of the artists and their desire for going beyond the formulaic music and restrictions of one genre of music. I will very closely track the development of Echodub and its members, as they really deserve this.

Psychic TV - Mr. Alien Brain vs The Skinwalkers [2008]

Nowa płyta Psychic TV to jedno z największych pozytywnych muzycznych zaskoczeń mijającego roku i zdecydowanie jedna z najlepszych płyt PTV w historii. Ta spontaniczność odegrała niebagatelną rolę w stworzeniu naprawdę poruszającego dzieła o bardzo wysokich walorach artystycznych i ponownie skierowała moją uwagę w stronę nieco zapomnianego zespołu. A new record by Psychic TV is one of the biggest music surprises of this year and definitely one of the best recordings of PTV ever. I have been (was?) a big fan of Psychic TV for nearly two decades, and most of all of various projects and achievements of Genesis P-Orridge, a controversial, extravagant but extremely honest Artist. There are not many people of his kind left on our earthly, mediated and commercialized, vale of tears. Therefore, I am even more pleased that GPO is in a top form, although I wish the occasion was not so sad. This record is a tribute to Lady Jaye Breyer P-Orridge – a wife of GPO who died exactly a year before the record’s release (9 October 2007.) GPO. Music was recorded practically without any rehearsals, mostly live in a studio during one day. This spontaneity played an enormous role in creating a really moving piece of work with very good artistic quality and once again drawn my attention to a bit forgotten band. More info here:

Nasz Bass Cię Zniszczy – „This Troy” EP by Pacheko & Cardopusher

English Version below the Polish text

EP). Pacheko natomiast ostro kolaboruje m.in. z baronem ciężkiego basu i autorem fantastycznych remisów i kolejnym moim ulubionym producentem, czyli Starkey’em.

Pacheko - Green Bull (Remix)

Pacheko & Cardopusher – Live in Maracaibo - i jeszcze video z ich występów live.

Great news. Split-EP „This Troy”, including 7 tracks of two heavy-bass / breakstep producers from Caracas, Venezuela (Yes, the Land of God Chavez) - Pacheko and Cardopusher has been just released. Cardopusher has been already involved in a few released, among others on Hyperdub label (a remix of Homeless, which is one of the tracks on the aforementioned EP). Pacheko is heavily collaboration, with none other but the don of heavy bass and author of fantastic remixes and at the same time one of my favorite producers at the moment, namely Starkey’em. I can think of no better recommendation.
I have followed the work of this duo, since hearing them on an absolutely smashing mixtape
pacheko & cardopusher - tranquera_mixtape recorded for tranquera.org

I immediately fell in love with Green Bull by Pacheko, and now the guys are releasing this track (in digital format) along a few others for Mashit label run by DJ C (Jake Trussell).
On Mashit website http://www.mashit.com/2008/12/09/thistroy/ you can preview tracks and get more info about the release. I really encourage you to give it a try. It is really worth checking. A combination of heavy, dubstep bass, broken beats, with kicking, synth-pop melodies, produces a surprisingly strong effect. I am really looking forward to more tracks of this in the future.

As a teaser – an entire track to be downloaded from the mashit website:

Pacheko & Cardopusher – Live in Maracaibo - a video from their live show.

Part of the Weekend Never Dies - 2 Many Djs

Bracia David i Stephen Dewaele, czyli 2 Many Dj's aka Soulwax to moim skromnym zdaniem bezapelacyjni mistrzowie wkręcania ludzi w parkiet. "Part of the Weekend Never Dies". O fenomenie 2 Many Dj's opowiadaja przyjaciele i znajomi ze sceny, czyli Justice, Tiga, LCD Soundsystem, Peaches, Kitsune, Klaxons i wielu innych.

------------------- English translation --------------

Brothers David and Stephen Dewaele, i.e. 2 Many Dj's aka Soulwax are IMHO absolute champions of party dancefloors. Their live sets are like bombs dropped with breath-taking frequency into the unsuspecting crowds. It does not matter whether they are playing for a few hundred people in a small club, or for thousands of ravers on open-air festivals, 2 Many Dj's, as well as their other projects - Soulwax, Radio Soulwax and Soulwax Nite Versions never fail. I had an extreme pleasure to see and feel their shows three times in various disguises and venues – they are unrivalled masters of bastard pop and post-punk electro. Now, one can prove my words without leaving a living room. A documentary about Soulwax shot by Saam Farahmand entitled "Part of the Weekend Never Dies" was released in April 2008. The author of the film recorded a few dozen shows of Dewaele Brothers and their band across the globe (including Poland!), his camera filmed backstage, he followed a concert tour of Soulwax Nite Versions, he managed to capture a real ecstasy of crowds when confronted with fantastic performance by the guys from Belgium. The phenomenon of 2 Many Dj's is analyzed by friends from the scene, namely Justice, Tiga, LCD Soundsystem, Peaches, Kitsune, Klaxons and many others. Despite the fact that the film is quite chaotic, watching it is still a great experience and fragments of shows even watched in a telly give a real foretaste of emotions caused by Soulwax live performance. And now a proverb and a wish of the day – May you see 2 Many Djs live at least once in your lifetime!
