Various Production are Adam Phillips and Ian Carter – two, mysterious producers rather avoiding publicity and PR. There is nothing strange about this, as their music does not need any promotion, it defends itself easily. In 2006 they released an absolutely amazing LP: The World is Gone – with hypnotic, post-trip-hop tracks dipped in a sauce of sub-bass, fused with dubstep and related genres of British electronic underground. In such hits as Hater, Soho or Don’t Ask they combined in a surprising way folk singing with hypnotic, depressive and very very heavy background music which in general became their trademark (well, let’s say one of them). They also collaborate with big names of grime scene (e.g. Virus Syndicate) and are well-known authors of remixes. On the podcast for Clash I point your attention in the direction of an outstanding remix of ‘Analyse’ by Thom Yorke! This is Various Production I love! In general, it is very difficult to characterize their music style, apart from one obvious statement: their productions are always super high-quality and much more happens in one of their music pieces than in five tracks of other producers.
They have just released a very nice podcast for Clash Music, in which they present an overview of their music achievements and fascinations, from dubstep through folk, electro to dirty, ass-kicking grime and back. It is not an easy music, but definitely extremely rich, intriguing and inspiring. Various Production promote here, among others, tracks from their new record: The Invisible Lodger (featuring Gerry Mitchell). The production recorded in collaboration with Gerry Mitchell, a poet and photographer from Scotland (which you can hear and feel in the fantastic accent and specific, hard pronunciation. I like Scottish English very much – well, it’s my professional deviation) The record in the vein of left field / gypsy folk / spoken word / ambient (one can probably mention 10 more styles, but what for?). After a very brief skimming through fragments of tracks which can be found here Fire Records it seems that this material is much more “meditative”, contemplative and claustrophobic than the to-date productions of Various Production, but why shouldn’t they add such experience to their rich portfolio? (one of the tracks, very good Idiot Box is presented in full on their myspace). The Invisible Lodger will be released in just a few days, at the beginning of February.

Various Production to Adam Phillips i Ian Carter –dwóch nieco tajemniczych producentów unikających raczej rozgłosu i PR’u. Nic dziwnego ich muzyka nie potrzebuje promocji, doskonale broni się sama. W 2006r. wydali absolutnie rewelacyjny album The World is Gone –z hipnotycznymi post-trip-hopowymi kawałkami zanurzonymi w sosie niskich basów, ocierającymi się o dubstep i pokrewne gatunki brytyjskiego undergroundu elektronicznego. W takich hitach jak Hater, Soho czy Don’t Ask w zaskakujący sposób połączyli folkowe śpiewanie z hipnotycznym, dołującym i potężnie ciężkim podkładem muzycznym, który generalnie stał się ich wizytówką (no powiedzmy jedną z kilku wizytówek). Kolaborują poza tym z tuzami sceny grime (ja np. Virus Syndicate) i udzielają się jako wzięci twórcy remiksów. Na podcascie dla Clash zwracam uwagę na genialny remiks ‘Analyse’ Thoma Yorke’a w ich wykonaniu! To właśnie Various Production, które kocham! Generalnie bardzo trudno określić ich muzyczny styl, poza jednym oczywistym stwierdzeniem: ich produkcje zawsze stoją na zajebiście wysokim poziomie a w ich jednym numerze muzycznie dzieje się zazwyczaj więcej niż w pięciu kawałkach ich kolegów po fachu.
