WOOFER COOKERS - The Dons of Glitch Hop from Canada

I owe a lot to Glitch Hop heads from Canada. First, Glitchy & Scratchy's and Dewey dB's (aka Crendore) now legandary mixtape Lazerbass played a fundamental role in my conversion from darkness of dubstep subs to more eclectic heavy bass genres, including glitch hop which I actually called ... lazer bass at that time :)). Secondly, Dewey dB and ill-esha run the best music forum I have had a pleasure to participate in - Glitch Hop Forum which is a meeting point for super talented producers and fans of crunky synths, whompy beat, sick bass and crazy acapellas.

They have recently launched a brand new, nonprofit label run by artists and for artists called Woofer Cookers. It is a companion site to online community Glitch Hop Forum, it showcases original music and merchandise with all proceeds going 100% to the artist or creating entity. Definitely a spot to check if you are looking for fresh bangers and bwampy beats.

Let's start a short review of music goodies available via Woofer Crookers from Jay Wikid's head-nodding Thumping and more downtempo spacy Whispers. I have covered some music and mixes by Jay on my blog, he is definitely a master of sick post hip hop edits riding on a glitch-out sick bass. Check da shizzle out!

Now, let's give the floor to The Mongoose & Bevvy Swift aka Glitchy & Scratchy from Vancouver, purveyors of twisted bass  and founders of my favorite Canadian crew of Integrated Grime Unit. Their recently released Broken Logic EP on Muti Records rocks the charts on Addictech. Listen to my favorite track from this EP - Embedit here. Then go to Woofer Cookers for more scratched out glitch hop from G&S.

8-Bit Glitch is a fucking monster of the tune, which I clearly remember from their legendary mixtape, now in even more whompy format:

... while Glitchy & Scratchy's remix of Canadian hip-hop crew of 50 Fingaz shows yet another music face of  the duo.

ill-esha adds more vocal flavor to Woofer Cookers stuff, with dubstep-infused Kitchen Sync making serious noise in the blogosphere.

Finally, the Captain of Glitch Hop Forum vessel, Dewey dB throws tons of crazy samples at his listeners to the acompaniement of throbbing bass and off-the-synch spastic beat. We(i)rd!

Speaking of Dewey dB, all Polish fans you better watch out and prepare yourself for a serious crunky and glitchy assault Made In Canada - on 1 May 2010 Dewey dB will play a set during the gig on in Wrocław!! POLAND GET READY!!!! Check the flyer for details.

Don't forget about fantastic merchandise on Woofer Cookers site, in particular great t-shirts with very nasty Glitch Hop bunny. I owe one of them and believe me this angry electric pet will make you stand out in the crowd in any club he he.

MIXTAPE THURSDAY

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND LISTEN TO IT.

Let's start from a live bomb, an audio file from a new regular night called Cassette held monthly in NYC by Machine Drum, Lando Kal and a few others.  It's a 3.5h live set by Eliot Lipp, Machine Drum, Lando Kal and Praveen. The leitmotive of Casette is "We Make That Sh*t Wann Dance" Yeah, I totally agree, I could hardly sit on my ass at work while listening to this pumping mixture of disco, rnb, crunky electro, hiphop, funk, glitch, B-more.

Moving to harder and more glitchy areas, MIMOSA has dropped an ultra heavy and crunky mix which may be a real hazard for your home soundsystem. Tigran rides on a very unique sound, combining soft and hard components in a special way. I'm a real sucker for everything coming from his camp, and this mix is absolutely top-notch quality.

(BTW, don't forget to check MiMOSA's Psychedelic Stereo EP released just a few days ago. Great music, outstanding artwork!)

More distortions in another glitch-hop / crunky / heavy bass mix by Mash Machine from a new Polish-based glitch hop project Boorgroove. Slugabed, Freddy Todd, Fulgeance, Opiou, Knight Riderz - it's enough to attrack me instantly. Great bass medication!

Classic and modern at the same time. With edIT, Prefuse 73, Harmonic 313 of Flying Lotus on one side and Rustie, Architeq, Dimlite, Dorian Concept, PANTyRaiD on the other. Another wicked boy :) Jay Wikid, from Vancouver, Canada, member of the infamous Integrated Grime Unit  in a wild, fat, funky glitch-hop mix. Lots of great rapping, acapellas and voice samples based on twisted, heavily rolling basslines plus dope synths, including a few originals and remixes by the man himself. An ultimate tool for any party. Just Try it!

Changing mood once more and entering downbeat, leftfield, dub, dnb, etno, instrumental hip hop and trip hop zone with a fantastic mix by Wear Rock, from NYC. This mix has been on a nearly constant rewind in my player for the last few days. Heartbreaking voyage into the land of sad but beautiful melodies and spacey, extended, pulsating bass, smoothly moving towards more oriental vibe. The absolute highlight of this set of mixes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

JAY WIKID - ON THE DOWN LOW REMIX PACK FOR FREE!!

More glitch crunk / liquid dancehall staff from Canada. Jay WIKID has just released a package consisting of 7 quite original remixes of classic tracks. Highlights include: Nancy Sinatra's beautiful Bang Bang turned into uptempo cut-up glitch-hop roller. Prodigy's all-time rave anthem Outaspace heavily mashed up in a dancehall manner. Collie Buddz riddim Come Around (one of my personal all-time faves) pulsating with liquid bass in a Bassnectar's style. WICKED! Jamaican punther Ward 21's Rudy of the Century received a surprising bleeps and beeps treatment from Jay Wikid with funktastic, weird drums and crazy melody. Beach Boys California Girls (!!!) remix is pure madness.

Pretty broad selection I would say. You'll definitely recognize the originals yet Jay Wikid managed to pitched them up adding his trademark heavy, distorted bassline all across creating one of the most interesting and diverse set of remixes that my headphones had a chance to acquaint with recently.

You can catch Jay Wikid on
glitch.fm as co-host on Friday's, mega super dope BWAMP show powered by Canadian crew of Integrated Grime Unit and GlitchHop Forum Crew.

Grab a very solid mixtape from Jay Wikid which I posted on my blog some time ago: Jay Wikid - Stay Tuned Mix

Jay Wikid's crafty basslines will turn your insides out and have you grinding before you know it. His musical recipes blend infectious hiphop rhythms with light sprinkles of glitchy fun - smothered with a topping of bassline warfare. Three years ago, the Canadian producer was chosen by Bassnectar as his protege; their first collaborative release, "Select Frequency", was the #1 Hip Hop track on Beatport for over 3 weeks and subsequently licensed to MTV, where it continues to rack up international plays. Jay also works under the alias "Ghetto Blastaz" in collaboration with Colorado native Jantsen. Expect fast-paced hip hop and dancehall breaks, overdriven glitchy crunk and electrozested zipper basslines from this hard-hitting duo. Currently you can catch Jay as a Friday night co-host on Glitch.FM radio, a resident of "Whatever's Dope" at Vancouver's Shine Nightclub, and furiously locked in the studio preparing a dynamic live show for his first international tour. His enthusiasm immediately ignites any dancefloor - watch him throb and bob, energetically dancing along with his crowd, as he twists and warps his wompy style productions. Whatever genre he's playing, you can count on Jay to keep it squishy, glitchy and sexy all at the same time. Straight rowdy!

The funk is in your area: Jay Wikid - Stay Tuned mix

Jay Wikid - Stay tuned Mix PART 1 and PART 2 (mediafire)

Arrghhh, I've almost forgotten about this fantastic mix. Fortunately, I found it again when skimming through my extensive playlists. Glitch hop of absolutely champion level by a Canadian Jay Wikid. Great stretching of sounds from heavy whomp and stomp banger beats with contagious hip hop accapelas to pretty spacey, deep and bass-heavy sonic landscapes. 80% of productions on the mix are Jay's own plus tracks by Jantsen, Ed Sol, David Seied, A Skills.

Do not forget to check Jay Wikid's myspace. There are tonnes of great tunnage there, and my favourites are: My girl rmx - a very touching midtempo refix. Mixer Elixer (“the funk is in you area”) – funky glitch hop with whomping sound which I LIKE very much! Masochist – very nice broken beats track with great samples from some UK movie (I reckon) and Rubba dub Dub – heavy dubstepish bassline and lots of glitchy electronica, fast rolling shit!
