TOP RELEASES OF 2010 BY DOKTOR KRANK

Part two of my best of the year series. Top 10 Releases of 2010 feature best LP’s and EP’ published last year. Again, as in the case of Top Tracks, I hate myself for leaving out so much great music. Thus I decided to at least mention the runners-up at the bottom of the list, which is still just the tip of an ice-berg.

2010 music-wise was absolutely AWESOME with new, niche genres and cross-genres gaining on popularity (e.g. glitch-hop, west-coast blap and beats, mutant hip-hop beats, future UK – wot u call it – thing) and the wind of creative change blowing most strongly from across the eastern Polish border – from the land of Mother Rossija – where tenths of talented producers (e.g. DZA, Pixelord, Demokracy, Moa Pillar, Pavel Dovgal, Myown to name just a few) are churning wicked tune after wicked tune in all the shades of dayglo synths.  German and Dutch beatmakers (like e.g. Halp, Coco Bryce, Doshy, Robot Koch, Swede:art) are finally gaining, quite deservedly, the proper recognition across the world for their brave and creative approach to beatmaking. Central and Eastern Europe is finally waking up and starts participating actively in the global scene (releases by PTR1, Teielte from Poland, Montgomery Clunk from Romania or 1000Names from Bulgaria are absolutely world class). UK urban sound is morphing like crazy, I have lost the track of all the transformations and trends long time ago. Well, to be honest  the apparently thriving UK Funky or Future Garage is not my thing, but it seems producers on this scene are flirting more and more often with post hip-hop beats which I can only support whole-heartedly expecting more developments in this area in 2011. Last year was also a tough time for any writer / blogger / journalist, your humble narrator including, who embarked on a futile task of describing the music which escapes any categorization or pigeonholing like never before. Using this opportunity I would like to kindly apologize for misleading or confusing terminology used in this blog. I hope this will continue in the future :)

I may sound like Euro Nationalist (I am not), but 2010 was apparently the Year of European Label. Error Broadcast, Project Mooncircle, Robox Neotech, Tokyo Dawn Records, Numbers, Black Acre, Fremdtunes  (to name just a few), are pushing this new mutant sound forward delivering many surprises and consistent, solid quality along the way. Of course one should not make a mistake of perceiving music only via geographical location of the artists or labels, because such distinctions do not work anymore. Which was nicely commented by Low Limit from Lazer Sword on his twitter recently: “a lot of these journalists/blog can't listen to music out of context of the artists' location, & the geographical assumptions along with it. tell me what it sounds like not what it you'd assume it sounds like given the place it was made. ill make footwork in a barn in idaho fukit” Ha ha ha – how true! Music is a global thing now, but I still believe that some local mentality, upbringing, sensitivity and setting in which you create your works of art also plays a substantial role in the total scheme. Ok, enough of this. Let's move to the verdict. And the winners are ...:

DOKTOR KRANK'S TOP RELEASES OF 2010

1. Swede:art. – Emotional Colors (Tokyo Dawn Records)

The sexiest debut of 2010.  Sex on the Airplane, Mozambique, Wonky Bikez or Linguistics will be my all-time-favorites for many years to come, I'm positive. A top-notch release full of the best future beats by a super talented producer from Germany. Since the first time I came across the work of Joachim Pruegl at the end of 2009, I really felt his potential, but I've still been surprised with his stellar debut. He has instantly catapulted himself to my personal top German producers league next to the mighty Robot Koch.

Slugabed – Ultra Heat Treated EP (Planet Mu)

I could not decide which release should I name my best release of 2010. I decided to present two prizes, another top first prize goes to the powerful, crazy and twisted synths of Brighton's wizz-kid whose EP ruled in my player in the first half of 2010. Slugabed makes no mistakes, takes no hostages and is merciless. More praise in my review above.

2. Lorn – Nothing Else (Brainfeeder)

Great, dark, deep and moving electronic trips by Lorn who released one the best album of 2010 in Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder. In this case, I personally believe that the pupil outgrew the master. I like Nothing Else better than IMHO a bit overhyped Flying Lotus' Cosmogramma. (Now, try something different. Listen to a nice mixtape produced by Lorn with Lefty aka the L.E.F.T. rapping to the beat from Nothing Else - Lefty aka L.E.F.T Kill the Messenger)

3. Low Limit vs. Lando Kal – Golden Handshake EP (Numbers)

This is what I wrote in my review on glitch.fm  “a cluster bomb of deconstructed sonic mayhem which will create havoc on any dancefloor from Paris to New York and L.A. Their music is about party and rave, about breaking the necks, setting bodies on fire in a digital dancefloor bonanza of purity-defying electro lazer assualt. This may sound bombastic, but for me Lazer Sword epitomizes the future of EDM, where hip hop swagger meets post-disco and funky beat, while all end up in a heavy-bass soup spiced up with tons of crunky synths, sick samples, ear-catching cut-ups, bleeps, beeps and whatnot.” Read to rest to learn why I believe this EP to be a motherfucking future party slammer! And why I have been feeding my Car’s sound system with it for months.

4. Robot Koch – Songs for Trees and Cyborgs (Project Mooncircle)

Second full-length release (along with the earlier Listen to Them Fade EP) by the most famous Robot from Berlin has solidified his position among top world producers. I love his unique style of button pressing and fat multi-track sonic textures he creates so consistently and skillfully. His vintage sound works equally well in his own productions as in collaborations with other artists (e.g. great tunes with Doshy and 1000Names). Again, on this release we receive great vocal tracks - Verbal Bruises with Portable Morla and Brujeria with Graciela Maria are among the best, next to Atari You featuring a great emcee from Poland – RQM (who have been part of the Berlin mafia for years). For real, there are not many artists on electronic music scene with such a vision and craft. RESPECT! Peeps from USofA should watch out as Robot Koch is going on a tour across the States in February 2011. Good news is he is working on many projects at the moment, thus we have a guaranteed delivery of superb beats also in 2011.

5. Pixelord – Lucid Freaks pt.1 (Error Broadcast)

Chip tune, 8-bit, wonky perverted button bonanza of top class by the Lord of All Pixels – one of the freshest, most original and experimental releases of the year! Hooked me instantly into beats from Russia, which became a real goldmine of fresh sounding electronic music.

6. Ninja Tune XX – Box Set

The almighty set of absolutely smashing 6 CD’s released to celebrate 20th anniversary of one of the most respected and forward-looking labales on the planet.  A MUST for any open-minded music lover. List of artists featured is simply ridiculous!

7. Doshy – Scatter Remixes (Robox Neotech).

The best remix compilation of 2010! Democracy, Rudi Zygadlo, Pixelord, Halp & Coco Bryce, Monky, Lakritze, Zeno and Doshy himself plus other remixers deliver a super package adding their creative personal touch to very good original material. I wrote in my review: "Robox Neotech is THE LABEL OF THE FUTURE. Trust my werd! Music they serve is soooo refreshing, mind-boggling, full of this kinky, bleepy, twisted lazers and sick beats, dipped in hard to describe RAW, post-industrial spices. Future beats attacking the listener with full force, engaging all your senses and making your wetware circuitry go high high high with liquid, digital emotions. Just listen to the latest offering from Robox Neotech - Scatter Remixes EP. I liked the the original EP by Doshy a lot, but these remixes really made my jaw drop low low low". Read the rest above.

8. PTR1 – Above the structures (Concrete Cut Recordings)

Definitely, the best release from Poland this year (closely followed by Teielte's Homeworkz). Intelligent, mesmerizing and enchanting dub music! A fragment of my review: All five original tracks by ptr1 create a very concrete block of bass-friendly music with absolutely mesmerizing melodies. I listen to tons of electronic productions, coming across tracks showing very good production skills, yet missing one extremely important component - namely soul. Whereas ptr1 has a rare gift enabling him to squeeze beautiful emotions out of the cold analog and digital tools. Just listen to Cold, my personal highlight of the release, this tune reaches deep deep inside my neural structure touching right nerves and proving once again why humans has loved music for millenia

9. Planet Soap – After Silkworm (Car Crash Set)

Another great remix compilation showcasing talents from across the world. Car Crash Set prepared a fat selection of of remixes of tracks taken from "Silkworm" EP by bass-trio Planet Soap from Milan, Italy (released in September 2010). Coming out of nowhere for some, but definitely not for the regular readers of my blog, as "After Silkworm" features the works of many of my favorite producers on the beat scene. Read the rest in my review above.

10. 1000names - Illuminated Man (Black Acre)

Great, full-length album on Black Acre by this Bulgarian duo was one of the biggest surprises this year for me. I heard their previous releases but it was  Illuminated Man that has really won me over. I like a kind of consistent, spacey flow to their music in which they throw tons of different bleeps and beeps, outstanding synths or great drums mixing succesffully IDM with post-Dilla hip-hop beats. Such tunes like Haunted Landscapes, Secondary Fauna or Pocket Calculators, though of course reminding of the pioneering work of Flying Lotus, have this 'contemporary vibe' which I am into so much in music recently.

11. Honorable mentions. I can highly recommend any of the following releases:

Magnetic Man – Magnetic Man
Teielte – Homeworkz,
Lazer Sword - Lazer Sword LP,
Finest Ego – Russian Beat Maker Compilation,
Montgomery Clunk – Superbus EP,
Rusti – Sunburst EP,
Rudi Zygadlo – Great Western Laymen,
TAZ - Gold Tooth Grin
SRC - Gold Coinz
Redinho - Bare Blips
Actress – Splazsh,
Starkey - Ear Drums and Black Holes,
Alex B - Moments,
Guttstar – Battery Hues EP,
Sedge Warbler – Welcome to the Universe,
Ben Samples – Choose your own adventure,
Bil Bless – the life mechanisms vol. 2,
Dusk Ensemble – Dusk Ensemble,
Mount Kimbie - Crooks & Lovers,
Illum Sphere - Titan EP

Lazer Sword - Batman EP

Lazer Sword - Batman EP (vinyl and digital)

Tracklist:

1. Batman
2. Batman (Lando Kal Remix)
3. Batman (Nguzunguzu Remix)
4. I’m Gone (Low Limit Remix)
5. I’m Gone (Rustie Remix)
6. I’m Gone ft. Turf Talk

Highly Recommended by Doktor Krank - 8 out of 10***

Lazer Sword is exploring new paths of vibrant, mutant beatz in their Batman EP which is a first step to their final release of full-length debut LP on November, 2nd. I'm grinding my teeth in high anticipation of the sonic boom the super combo will unleash on the public! I have been Lando Kal's and Low Limit's fan for years and during that time the way in which they developed their style, their extra-polished technical skills, their mutual complementarity and eclectic approach to music are simply astonishing. When playing live, either solo or as a duo, they will force everyone to heavy bounce with natural ease through their top selection and MPD wizardry. Give'em a venue, any venue, and they will easily rip it apart :) I lived through such experience during the best gig of my life here in Poland, so trust my werd! Yet, as comes to the music they produce, it is always much much more than simple stomp, bounce, push & kick. Their production skills are impeccable and they are always on a lookout for some fresh, inspiring music patterns which can be squeezed from their fancy machines, while being very open to what is happening on the global electronic scene. Yeah, they have outgrown their pure-American heritage long time ago, and now seem to be more interested in electro / mutant / UK / urban sound. With fantastic effect to say the least.

I wrote about the title track Batman on my blog already, so not to repeat myself I copy & paste my comment: "Batman is a bit different from the usual high-energy electro output of Low Limit and Lando Kal, yet it definitely bears the trademarks of their style - tons of cut-up samples, mutated vocals, cold synths and very distinct micro-beat plus wonky bassline. One can definitely hear further move towards the Europe / UK urban scene (well, to be honest the boyz has followed this direction in their releases for some time already) and Batman easily fits the Glasgow's Numbers profile (what is obvious) as well as L-vis 1990's Night Slugs or some other UK G / future garage imprints"

Apart from Batman, A-side includes two fantastic remixes by Lando Kal and Nguzunguzu. Lando Kal remade the title track into slow burning synth-driven roller, while Nguzunguzu created a great, minimalistic banger with neon synths, fantastic drums, sick button job and distinctive melody line. For me personally - the highlight of this release!  A flip side, or should I write A' side, includes an electro glitch-hop anthem I'm Gone featuring the vocals by bay-area hood-rapper Turf Talk. My car's sound system can't have enough of this track and makes me bounce pretty hard, which would be rather hazardous if not for a high roof in my car :)) Low Limit's remix of I'm Gone is a laidback affair with beutiful synths and spacey loops, while Rustie went into a different direction delivering an angry and raw bombastic dancefloor banger to be digested on proper subs with kilos of Watts. In general, one of the most interesting and inspiring releases this year. Highly recommended by Doktor Krank!

BATMAN / I'M GONE FEAT. TURF TALK 12" PROMO MIX by LAZER SWORD

LAZER SWORD - FACT MIX 133

LAZER SWORD - FACT MIX 133

I have been waiting for this eagerly since last week  when I've learnt that my favorite psych-disco blap hop combo of Lando Kal and Low Limit a.k.a. Lazer Sword is going to drop a new propa mix in Fact Mix series. Already 20 minutes into their work my neck and shoulders hurt like hell and I realized I push the keys on my laptop in unison with the sick rhythm of grimey electro funk out skunky lazer shit - the sequence of Terror Danjah-Gucci Mane-DVA-Slugabed tracks in the middle is f...g insane!! LL and LK break your expectations of what comes next each time, twisting the beat, moving with ease between r'n'b vocals and dirty drops and kicks, electro whomp and oldschool grime or hip-hop anthems, mixing all the shit in a kind of electro cauldron. This time they serve even more eclectic music, including nice joints from their homies  like Mr. Dibiase, Zackey Force Funk (check a joint y ZFF with a Polish producer Piotruś Pan here), Machine Drum through heavy weight hip-hop to, well ... enought of that - just LISTEN. Definitely one of the best mixes this year!!!!

Quite surprisingly the mix includes only a two or three tracks by the boys themselves, they rather prefer to show their fantastic selector skills than promote their own music. Anyawy, anyone intending to rinse Lazer Sword's own stuff should definitely cop their super hot EP The Golden Handshake, recently released on the new Glasgow-based uber-label NUMBERS. 3D Action Jackson by Lando Kal or Where You Been 7.5 by Low Limit are simply THE SHIT (sorry for the repetitions but as you know I had quite an insane week at work and still have not recovered from my then-robot self). Expect a proper review of this EP on my blog soonish.

MIXTAPE THURSDAY

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND LISTEN TO IT.

Let's start from a live bomb, an audio file from a new regular night called Cassette held monthly in NYC by Machine Drum, Lando Kal and a few others.  It's a 3.5h live set by Eliot Lipp, Machine Drum, Lando Kal and Praveen. The leitmotive of Casette is "We Make That Sh*t Wann Dance" Yeah, I totally agree, I could hardly sit on my ass at work while listening to this pumping mixture of disco, rnb, crunky electro, hiphop, funk, glitch, B-more.

Moving to harder and more glitchy areas, MIMOSA has dropped an ultra heavy and crunky mix which may be a real hazard for your home soundsystem. Tigran rides on a very unique sound, combining soft and hard components in a special way. I'm a real sucker for everything coming from his camp, and this mix is absolutely top-notch quality.

(BTW, don't forget to check MiMOSA's Psychedelic Stereo EP released just a few days ago. Great music, outstanding artwork!)

Track List:
1. MiM0SA - iN Search of Beauty
2. PantyRaid vs. MiM0SA - Chaos Control
3. MiM0SA - Days Go By (ReMiXx)
4. MartyParty vs. MiM0SA - The Perfect Flaw
5. MiM0SA - Looking Back
6. MiM0SA - California Rude Boy
7. MiM0SA - LSD Excursions
8. NastyNasty - Python Kiss (MiM0SA ReMiXxx)
9. MiM0SA - Money to Blow (ReMiXxx)
10. MiM0SA - Bamboo
11. MiM0SA - Ride The Snake

More distortions in another glitch-hop / crunky / heavy bass mix by Mash Machine from a new Polish-based glitch hop project Boorgroove. Slugabed, Freddy Todd, Fulgeance, Opiou, Knight Riderz - it's enough to attrack me instantly. Great bass medication!

Boorgroove_BlipHop by Mash Machine

Opiuo - Computer music

A slight change of mood and more interesting stuff from Poland. Space Ish mix by Weekid hailing from Łódź (just wonder how your international browsers will see our strange Polish letters he he).  West Coast sound meets beat scene, wonky sound fights with glitched basslines. Classic and modern at the same time. With edIT, Prefuse 73, Harmonic 313 of Flying Lotus on one side and Rustie, Architeq, Dimlite, Dorian Concept, PANTyRaiD on the other. A real, sublime and eclectic sonic feast!

21 | De Juepuchas - El Último Viaje

Another wicked boy :) Jay Wikid, from Vancouver, Canada, member of the infamous Integrated Grime Unit  in a wild, fat, funky glitch-hop mix. Lots of great rapping, acapellas and voice samples based on twisted, heavily rolling basslines plus dope synths, including a few originals and remixes by the man himself. An ultimate tool for any party. Just Try it!

Tracklist:

Changing mood once more and entering downbeat, leftfield, dub, dnb, etno, instrumental hip hop and trip hop zone with a fantastic mix by Wear Rock, from NYC. This mix has been on a nearly constant rewind in my player for the last few days. Heartbreaking voyage into the land of sad but beautiful melodies and spacey, extended, pulsating bass, smoothly moving towards more oriental vibe. The absolute highlight of this set of mixes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Next mix is the work which falls into my personal category of "Hit Parades" as the tracklist of The Fozzie Bear Crunkadelic mix by Psymbionic (a DJ and the owner of the cool blog: Bwomp Beats) includes all the best of the last few months in the mid-tempo glitch / crunk and dubstep department. MARY ANNE HOBBS - BBC 1 EXPERIMENTAL - 11/05/09 CONNOISSEURS LABEL SHOWCASE

Mary Anne Hobbs – Experimental 2009 11 05 Soul Motive, Modern Love and Numbers [Hotfile]

Connoisseurs Label Showcase presenting three labels: Soul Motive from Bristol, Modern Love from Manchester and finally Numbers from Glasgow. The best Mary Anne Hobbs show in months. You know YOU WANT THIS BADLY!!!!!

Soul Motive is represented by very emotive and dreamy, exclusive mix from Eleven Tigers. Fantastic listening experience within Bristol’s dub-tech / IDM imaginarium, including Eleven Tigers original material as well as Perverelist and Hyetal tunes. I’m not a big fan of dub-tech myself but this piece of music is really, really ‘touching’. As sung by a female in one of the tracks by Eleven Tigers this mix is Driving my crazy driving my crazy… Eleven Tigers will release his new single in January 2010 with Perverelist remix on a flipside. Already in December, Soul Motive plans the new releases by Headhunter and Geom. Watch out!

Then comes another nice mix, this time from Manchester’s label – Modern Love, which was heavily rinsed by M.A.H. in her show in the past. Including only unreleased material by among others Claro Intelecto, Andy Stott, Andrea, Milli, Hate. This mix is also quite OK, although for me the weakest one out of the three presented.

As in a proper thriller, the real bomb awaits the listener at the end. The third mix has really blew my mind. This is the showcase mix for a new Glasgow label – Numbers which was created after converging Wireleblock, Stuffrecords and Dress 2 Seat. The mix includes tons of exclusive release for next year by e.g. Low Limit, Lando Kal, Rustie, Slugabed, Redinho, Ghosts on tape, Hudson Mohawke, Emvee, L-vis 1990, Taz Buckfaster, Deadboy. Fuck me! So many great artists on the fore-front of electronic music gathered in one place! If this is not the best label of 2010, I’ll be damned. Actually the first release in 2010 – Golden Shake EP will be by none other than our old homies: Low Limit and Lando Kal from Lazer Sword!!! followed by Redinho’s “Bare blip” and Taz Buckfuster’s stuff. Oh boy I can hardly wait. I am absolutely positive this will blow my mind. Numbers’ label launch party took place on 6 November 2009, with Lazer Sword live, and world debut of the new Rustie live show– this was the great party I’m sure. Just a few days before we had a chance to meet and see the Lazer Sword slaying the crowd here in Poland and adding Rustie to the bill is really too much, he he. I keep my fingers crossed for Numbers.

HELLAZER W/ LAZER SWORD & DJ DIALS @ METRO. MAD PARTY REVIEW!!

Oh, boy! Lazer Sword killed me on Saturday. This was like the best f...g bounce I in my entire life. And believe me I've seen quite a number of various acts doing havoc but none of them compared to what Lazer Sword did in Metro in Białystok with people jumping like crazy all around with big smiles on their faces. It was hard, rocky and full of lazers as expected. I'm still tired after extremely exciting but also exhausting experience on this unforgettable halloweeen night. Well, the first post on this very blog was about Lazer Sword's Blap to the future mixtape, and now just barely a year after I had a chance to meet the boys and see them playing live. WICKED!!! I cant wait to see them again plyaing in Poland, which I'm sure will happen rather sooner than later. Once again thanks a lot guys for the fresh music gracing my ears and really pushing crunk sound all across cold northern part of my home country. Big up Low Limit and Lando Kal for a devastating set, Dj Dials for some heavy heavy dubstep bangers, DJ Koola for making this all happen , EH! Marine and Dizzy Trouble for bounce bounce bounce and more bounce and DJ Auricom for warming up the crowd!! YOU WERE ALL FANTASTIC!! (even backstage ha ha ha). Also mucios gracias to Metro's management for open minds music-wise and such a laidback atmosphere inside. Metro has been a great venue for years but 2009 seems to be like f...g huge. Don't stop please. You are the best. Enough. Let the music and pictures speak.

YEAHHHH!! A week before the Halloween Party with Lazer Sword in Białystok, another killing remix popped up in the Internet. This time acquacrunk lazers cut up a great tune Designer by CLP i.e. Chris de Luca and Phon.o featuring Polish-born emcee RQM (yeah, another Lazer Sword - Poland connection). RQM's vocal fits perfectly the mega solid synths and cut-up beats delivered by Lando Kal and Low Limit. Oh, boy I may really shit my pants during their show :) I wish RQM could be there with us, I'd be stoked to hear this shit performed live with vocals.

CLP - Designer feat. RQM (Lazer Sword Remix) by rqmpropaganda

The track is taken from the CLP's EP - Strictly Confidential to be released on Sugarcane Recordings on 13 November 2009.

The tracklist on this EP looks EPIC!!!!!

2.Lando Kal feat Spoek Kites (Dub Mix)
3.CLP I'm So Trill feat. Spoek (Sweat X Vs Fs Green Mix)
4.CLP Superconfidential f. Tunde Olaniran (NicSarnoMix)
5.CLP Superconfidential f. Tunde Olaniran(TopBillinMix
6. CLP Putcha Handz Up f. Rayzaflo (CLP Street Version)
7. CLP Designer feat. Rqm (Lazersword Mix Instrumental)
8. CLP Superconfidential f. Tunde Olaniran (TopBillinMix lnstrumental)

CLP (Chris De Luca and Phono) are coming off their highly acclaimed "Supercontinental" album release with some selected works and special bits for the ever popular Sugarcane Recordings imprint. This time bringing a mixture of revamped album drops and down right nasty remixes. Watch out because the features on this one are doing damage.

SPOEK (Boysnoize) next level rap lyricist based in south africa, with more and more releases up his sleeve as Playdoh and Sweat X, makes rounds on a couple of tracks for STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL. San Francisco favorite Lando Kal of LAZERSWORD providing the dubbed out electro bits on Spoek's "Kites" never disappoint. Basement style basslines and a popping synth line put the bounce on this one. Spoek even recuts some vox on the original "I'm so Trill" for Sweat X to beat down and provide that extra polish.

LAZERSWORD really out do themselves with "Designer" feat. RQM (Exploited) on a hip electro tip. Wobbly squelched out sub bass and perfect vox provided by RQM make this next level track an undeniable favorite. This one is already getting some radio play and press attention before circulation and will be on rotation for a long while. Don't miss.

Finnish label and beat extraordinaires TOP BILLIN have been making it happen on all levels with top productions getting worldwide support from Baltimore to Helsinki. Releases on Trouble and Bass, tour support for MIA, making floor inspired crate filling gems for the fans out there; and their remix of CLP's "Superconfidential" proves no different. Baltimore and 80's inspired TOP BILLIN takes Tunde Olarian's vocal to new heights. Perfect for all types of floors, this one is a sureplayer for the heads out there. Even the Instrumental is a crate filler.
Strictly Confidential keeps coming with NIC SARNO (ESP). From Milan his output is on the same tip as artists like Crookers, MSTRKRFT and Congorock. Member of The Love Supreme is signed to devoted Italian house music label ESP. He grabs Superconfidential and puts it straight on the dancefloor. Bumping beats and quirky synths that fit into sets for the likes of Oliver$ and Jesse Rose.
AND to top it off. Strictly Confidential has been mastered by THE CROOKERS and will see the exclusive vinyl release of CLP's original "I'm So Trill"

HUGG & PEPP - PENGUINI (LANDO KAL EDIT)

HUGG & PEPP - PENGUINI (LANDO KAL EDIT)

Darth Vader you stand no chance with the lazers of
Lando Kal !!! (1/2 of Lazer Sword together with Low Limit). He mashed a great synth-driven Penguini by Hugg & Pepp (Maximus EP released recently on Turbo Recordings). Actually, Hugg & Pepp are mighty acid techno kings from Sweden, better known as brother Dahlbacks and they really know how to produce a good shit. Lando Kal's trippy edit, full of fantastic lazer synths, cut-up voice samples, weird melodies and ass-kicking acepella, elevated Hugg & Pepp's music to another level. I can't wait to hear Lazer Sword dropping similar stuff at the gig at the end of October in Białystok. It's just 3 more weeks! Well, maybe I sound a bit too agitated, but you know, here in Central Europe we don't often have a chance to see such artists and this type of music is still a deep niche in Europe in general. Anyway, the boys still have some free slots on their tour timetable - check their myspace and don't miss such an opportunity.

Bonus: Listen to Low Limit's Turf Day, a new track to be released soon.

LAZER SWORD - SWEATPANTS MONEY MIXTAPE FOR NALDEN.NET

I absolutely love Lazer Sword's crunk aesthetics and brave and uncompromised way in which they 'ride' their gear to produce crispy, multi-layered beats - original, diverse but most of all extremely contagious. On top of that, their use of accapellas is really unparalleled. LL and Lando Kal has just released their new mixtape for nalden.net. Lazer Sword = DOPE SHIT, thus you know what to expect from these guys. They are on a different f..g level, for real! Just listen to this mix, it's a work of art (yeah, I know I tend to overuse this term, but can't do nothing about it when confronted with such music goodies). Hey producers what are you waiting for?

SWEATPANTS MONEY is a stellar mix featuring 26 tracks, including tons of smashing edits and remixes by the duo (just listen to Lando Kal's "Fuzzy Ankles w/ T.I." - best track coming from them, hope to see it released in the near future or Lazer's remix of Vortex Cookies) and serious selection of ultra dope shizz from other artists plus of course acappella's from such names like Ludacris, Jay-Z, M.I.A. & Eazy-E. It goes in a nice package with great artwork. Don't sleep on this. IT'S A MUST FOR ANY CRUNK / GLITCH HOP LOVER!

LAZER SWORD is the duo of San Francisco based LOW LIMIT and LANDO KAL. They like to make music that sounds like your favorite top 40 rap shit chopped up into a tornado filled with razor blades and molasses. Or maybe like Frank Zappa rocking the home made Lil John tank-top at the rooftop party. Ha, ha, ha indeed!

Low Limit / Mr Dibiase - Producer 2 Part 2 split 7" vinyl

DOK KRANK’S TIP OF THE MONTH

MAY THE LAZER FORCE BE WITH YOU

Low Limit / Mr Dibiase - Producer 2 Part 2
7" Vinyl Single
Low Limit - Inspirational Jumpsuit
Mr Dibiase - May The Force

LL aka Low Limit, of SF-based Lazer Sword fam has finally released a vinyl. Oh YEAH!! We have waited much too long to see this coming after listening to tons of super dope beats on his myspace. A split record in Fat City UK's Producer series part 2 was released together with LA-based MR. DIBIASE Grab a 7″ vinyl and digital downloads on Fat City website or find it elsewhere in digital stores.

LL’s Inspirational Jumpsuit is a quintessential blap of the future, deep music meditation in a Lazer Sword trademark aqua crunk style, full of great synths and infectious melody lines soaked with glitched and deconstructed beats and bleeps. It goes straight to the ‘opening track’ spot on my next Car Mix vol. XXX compilation !!! Cannot wait to hear more from LL and Lando Kal, these cruel bastards who make their fans wait so long for proper releases. Especially those of us living far far away from SF or LA without any chance (save for some scarce Euro Tour gigs) to see the combo destroying a dancefloor with their famous live sets.

Mr Dibiase’s May the Force is a bit different story. Oh yes the force is definitely with the musician here. Powerful glitchy reworking of the main theme of Star Wars. Great, low-end, 8bit synths and heavy drums, full of chip-tune bleeps, tweaks and punches plus mandatory laser sword sample (the sword not the band, mind you!). For me, one of the best remixes of the famous pop-culture theme. I will play this to my kid who currently goes through the period of absolute fascination with Luke, Anakin and Yoda to see his reaction.

Buy this 7’’ vinyl or digital release, support independent electronic musicians. For a mere US$ 1.58 for two tracks in digital format and US$ 4 for a vinyl – it’s peanuts.

ESSENTIAL PURCHASE - 9 OUT OF 10 LAZERS.
