Montek's Party Report - Bassnectar @ CrawDaddy, Dublin.

Some time ago I 'poked' Bassnectar via my blog about him being very American-centric and that he totally neglects his fans in other parts of the world (I overexaggarated, as usual). A few months passed and he landed in Europe on a 7-gig tour :)) After something like 6 years since his latest visit here. Unfortunately, I was/will not able to make it to any of his performances, which sucks totally !!! I feel pretty shitty about this :(

At least, I was able to send my special 'party reporter' to Crawdaddy in Dublin. Montek, my younger brother who lives in the beautiful capital of Ireland is another well-known bass-lover in my family, upcoming producer and IT guru. I did not need to convince him at all that he should be there on Friday. Below is his report from an 'osom night with Bassnectar, including a few heaaaaaaaaaavy videos. Enjoy!



Welcome bass lovers & everybody who is ready to get some nasty bass bin!

We have Bassnectar's show at Dublin's Crawdaddy on the bill. Simply put, it was totally awesome! Night was really special, even legen... wait for it... dary! One of the reasons is that it actually happened here, just one of only 7 European gigs of his 2010 Euro Trip. Secondly, this took place in Crawdaddy which always, not knowing why, delivers proper vibe. It might be due to the fact that my first dubstep nights happened there with infamous mystik, digital UK brothers or maybe it is the way bass propagates in the premises, which by the way isn't the best sound system out there, still easily enough to shake yer troubles away & keep you warm inside.

When I got there around 12pm, half an hour before the scheduled set time, the queue was still long, thou event was worth waiting. While standing there and getting ready for the action, LCD Soundsystem crew passed me (didn't catch them with my conscious as they are so Irish looking, James Murphy, right? It was the next day, while checking what's up in the city, I've spotted them having show in the next-door's "Tripod"). Back to the story, at the end of the queue was a really nice surprise in a shape of my name on the list. Thanks Krank! More digits in the wallet for alcopops.





To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of Bassnectar's productions. Surely, he possess great technical skills, still I have a feeling he's afraid to get into it a bit, placing prolificness before experiment. As a result his tunes are solid, but a bit predictable. What I'm trying to say is he feels comfortable with one idea and builds every new production on it. That's really in opposition with UK scene, which is morphing, mutating, stripping genres and reorders them in a search of that mandatory uniqueness. The reason I'm bringing all that is the fear I had before his live set. Fear of monotony and missed experimental potential, which is a basic requirement in the field of electronic music perception.





None of my fears materialized! Bassnectar gave a solid, well thought-through, yet not static performance, perfectly balancing breaks, accumulations and repetitions, not too much not too less, that's the skills I was mentioning before. Sound scope was amazing as well, cowboy laser slashes, hip-hop dirty vocals, jah interludes, well-known sirens, dubby low, low basses and finally perfectly synced wobbles. Yes, Lorin, we're feeling it, as he might have asked a few times about it. Didn't you see that guy spilling his beer, in a very snazzy way, all over full dancefloor, with your first bass hit? That was really spectacular I must say. Trip was amazing, that's the type of producers and personalities, you'd like to follow. Dude was smiling, jumping, waving and finally pretending to be a wobble bass, so much appreciated for live musicians. One thing I'm not sure about is his setup. Was it only Ableton with two channels ported to mixer (which is by the way so simple yet effective solution) & sorted list of tunes or was it something more sophisticated (giving an option to pick up a tune with the crowd flow). I hope it was something more, what would explain his frequent headphone cueing.





The only downside of it all, was my increasing boredom, due to no quids, a possible road trip next day and kind of Lorin's transition back to the way he started. I figured nothing new is going to happen (was I right?), so I retreated and headed back to the lair. Night was complete, giving me at least a month of comfort over daily routines. Plus, man! It's a nice start to the weekend. Now, I'm chillin, which I wish you a lot.

Recent releases reviews pt. 1

I've realized I have no chance to write proper reviews of all the recent releases I really like due to the lack of time. And in blogosphere things become old quite fast, thus I decided to draw the attention of my readers to the bass-heavy / beat music YOU MUST NOT MISS which has been released recently. I'll try to write at least a few words about each of them, while being fully aware these artists deserve much more than that.

Swede:art - Emotional Colors Remixes

Let's start from Swede:art and the remix compilation of my personal record of the year, i.e. Emotional Colors. This is still top-3 album of the year next to Lorn's Nothing Else and probably only Lazer Sword's full-length has a chance to beat it. Since the first time I came across the work of Joachim Pruegl at the end of 2009, I really felt his potential, but I've still been surprised with his stellar debut. He has instantly catapulted himself to my personal top German producers league next to the mighty Robot Koch. Tokyo Dawn Records did a right thing and released a fantastic Emotional Colors Remixes featuring a few absolutely fantastic remixes. All in all this is one of the best comps of this type I've heard in ages. Nearly as good as the original. TOKiMONSTA from Brainfeeder's roster delivered the most contagious, addictive and perfect rework, closely followed by Kidkanevil's rainy, downtempo improvisations, Sam Irl's banging, dark neon synth-driven remix of my personal best track by Swede:art, namely Linquistics or Devonwho's deconstructions of Mosambique. I also extremely liked the jazzy remix of Embrace by Waxolutionists and Edizione Crumar's electric refix of A Room of Prayers. Actually, you wouldn't find a weak remix on this compilation. Grab the entire release on Tokyo Dawn site. It's worth every penny.

The Great Mundane - This is So You EP

We remain in a slightly similar area with another release. The Great Mundane is one the Portland's (Oregon) premiere beatsmakers and in his free EP - This is So You he shows the real depth of his talent, which is immense to say the least. He offers super-tight samples, impeccable production skills, great button work and a kind of jazzy, spacey feel to music I like so much recently. Associated with STS9 and 1320 Records, he also has been releasing records and collaborations since 2007 (psymbolic, mush, runriots records). This EP is perfect from the first to the last note. It's even difficult for me to point to some highlights - this is a kind of work that needs to be digested in full. The great news is that we should expect remixes for SPL, Lorn, KiloWatts & Bluetech as well as his next full length in May 2011 on 1320 Records. Can't wait.

Bassnectar - Wildstyle EP

The last one for today's wrap-up is Bassnectar, the weekend is coming and there is no better tool to pump up your party attitude than to listen to a few ultra bass-heavy tunes from his new EP - Wildstyle. Already the first track - Bassnectar's remix of Hot Right Now will seriously burn your speakers or internal brain circuitry (if you listen to this EP via your headphones - thus beware!). The sonic onslought continues unwavaring with the highlights being: gnashing dubstep bomb of the title track, The 808 Track with baile-funk drums turning into drilling wobbley affair, and a sick, filthy collab with ill-gates in Encore. Kudos go to Lorin for including more experimental stuff (Fun with Synthesizers) on this EP. All in all, the release did not left me jaw-dropped but it's a solid block of your best bass-heavy music doing wonders on any dancefloor across the globe or using the full potential of your sub-woofer. BTW - peeps in Europe should start their preperations already - Bassnectar will visit and old contintent in November. Check Bassnectar's site for details.

Use of Bass Weapons

The master of heavy-bass artillery Bassnectar strikes back with another blasting mash-up of the Massive Attack's anthem Dream On. I've been a fan of this group for decades and Dream On is easily one of the three best tunes from them ever! Bassnectar paid proper tribute to the Bristolian crew with overstretched, lazer synths and distorted and pulsating bassline. Additional vocals also work quite well, even though the tripped out flow of the original is seriously disturbed. All in all the tune is better than I expected, as I still believe the original is too good to be messed with.

Seek & Destroy (Bassnectar remixxx)

Bassnectar bootlegging biznis is back with huuuuge remix of Metallica's Seek and Destroy. Easily, one of the best remixes from Lorin ever. Super fat crunky bassline and totally sick drums shift Metallica's song to the level the old heavy-metal dinosaurs would have never imagined (I hope someone sent them this stuff). Apparently, this is another successful episode in the famous series of Bassnectar Tour's secret weapons launched during his gigs. I use the term 'apparently' as Lorin  (stereotype mode on) sometimes behaves like a typical American who thinks that only America is worth exploring  and that we in Europe wouldn't  be interested in seeing Bassnectar performing live in some city next to us (stereotype mode off). Believe me Lorin it's not true :) I hope you're not afraid of flying across the pond?!

Here we go boys and girls. Get ready for some serious heavy biznis delivered to you by a busy bee Bassnectar. He has just dropped another super sick EP of face-melting quality. You better check your amplifiiers and speakers for overload protection and warn your neighbors before previewing this stuff. As Lorin wrote on his site, the tracks on this release were inspired by a recent tour across the States. Here, one can definitely hear a very successful attempt of squeezing the sheer power and energy of big hall sound system - creating havoc on the dancefloor with timestretched build-ups and hard hitting drops riding on sick bassline, which is the trademark of Bassnectar stylee - into a digital or vinyl format to be played not only by DJ's in their sets but also at home or at work :) Of course the actual unmediated experience of going to the club to be destroyed into pieces by a big wall of heavy bass cannot compare to listening to this on any media, but ... I still expect to share a few nice jumpy and vibrating moments of serious bass pumping when playing Blast Off or Timestretch on my car's sound system with volume set a bit too high for an average listener. Ha, ha, ha this will be my personal revenge on all these wankers playing latest top-40 shit in their BMW's of SUV's. No matter how hard they pump the volume up, they will never be able to jam the heavy bass coming from my vehicle :)))

Bassnectar managed to release one of the best, most consistent and blasting EP's I've heard this year with 4 fantastic original compositions and 4 equally good remixes with top-notch production quality. Starting from a typical party smasher of Here We Go, with crunky and distorted bassline, a mandatory build-up and emcee instructing people to get ready to whatever sonic assult comes next, through pulsating wobbley extravaganza of a dubstep riddim in Bass Head to the highlight of the entire realease for me, that is Blast Off.  A collaborative effort of Bassnectar with a talented Jantsen from Colorado (I've heard tons of unreleased from Jantsen, and believe my werd - this boy knows how to twist the knobs and push various buttons) will simply blast your head off with sick and crunky, looped synths, infectious beat and a cut-up voice sample most of you will definitely recognize. Listening to this track makes me really sad when I realize how far from the epicenter of Bassnectar DJ'ing activity I live, the more so as he seems to tour only US forgetting about the rest of the world (yes, Mr. Lorin, it is a complaint from a European!). Timestretch is a full-fledged heavy bass meditation rolling through the speakers (or headphones) with a force of a 100-ton tank, crushing everything on its way, but gushing with emotions nonetheless. Then comes a nice little remix of DJ Vadim's Maximum feat. La Methode by Bassnectar and ill.Gates.  Great head-nodding business and dancehall riddim relying on a sparkling bass.  Westcoast Lo-Fi Remix of Timestretch is even more epic and spacey than the original, best remix in the pack for sure. Finally, two low sub killers in filthy dubstep remixes of Bass Head. SPL turned the original into dark and crunky wobbley affair which, when reinforced by Funktion One type of sound system, would easily rip open the chests of dancers or at least have a serious impact on the integrity of the venue's walls. This tune gives me real shivers! MRK 1 remix is also a wobble business but with more crispy clean bassline. All in all, Timestretch a must for any fan of sick subs and whompy bass. Highly recommended!

You all probably heard about a new fat and dope pack of Bassnectar remixes of his highly acclaimed Cozza Frenzy album. The remixers include Stagga, DJ Vadim, Noah D, Roommate, J.Boogie,  RJD2, and finally Robot Koch. The master of twisted beats, bleeps and vintage sound treats from Berlin has proved his fantastic production skills again offering one of the best reworks in the pack, next to crazy Stagga's trademark wobbly bassline joint. Robot Koch totally abandoned the characteristic Bassnectar melodic synths-driven bassline of the original adding more stomping, fast drums, pads and changing the bassline into heavy, whompy  biznis. Serious head-nodding highly required in this case. Gimme more mister!

That's not all from Robot Koch. On 26th February he will release the EP with remixes of his fantastic debut full-lenth album Death Star Droid. For me personally it was the record of 2009, thus I'm very very anxhiously waiting for this pack to drop. The more so, as remixers include a few of the super hot names on the future beat circuit, like e.g. UK's wunderkid Loops Haunt or SF-based youngster Shlohmo!!!! As a foretaste, and as a gift for for a free dowload, here is a Phon.o refix of Gorom Sen. It's a great dancefloor-oriented roller with beautiful synths and pumping beats. Cop it and blast it looouuud!

Yeahhhhh! Boombox king, Bassnectar has just dropped a super hot mixtape he did for the next issue of the International DJ Magazine. First public mixtape by Lorin in two years. Make your ghetto blasters, car sound systems and ipods ready for the bass force to be unleashed on you. The mix is very Bassnectar-centric, including lots of the re-re-tweaked versions by the man himself and what is surprising for me personally - quite a lot of drum'n'bass stuff . 

Lorin says: "Welcome to another Bassnectar Transmission. This episode is 44 minutes and 25 seconds of 10th-generation genre-re-wiring, exploring bass music through an open-minded lens, regardless of tempo, or even beat-structure… this sound clash aims straight for your body, with the intent to melt you down into a fidgeting, wobbling mess of enthusiasm and delight. In addition to some of my favorite old records and samples, this mix features several brand new bassnectar tracks, heaps of exclusive edits, re-edits, and re-red-re-edits. Lot’s of re. Lot’s of mix. Ooah - Foolish Science. What a great tune by Josh Ooah of Glitch Mob, PANTyRAiD and Of Porcelain!!! A teaser for the forthcoming compilation of Acid Crunk Vol. 2 compiled by An-ten-nae to be relased on Muti Music in October / November. The most eagerly anticipated release for me this Autumn! A real trans-atlantic clash of uber talents, feat. Akira Kiteshi, Datsik, Robot Koch, Gemmy, Ill Gates, Marty Party, Ill-Esha & Dewey DB, Ben Samples, Bluetech, Bassnectar and of course An-ten-nae.

Bassnectar shared another bootleg from his extensive collection of nearly finished / not yet finished tracks, a kind of mash-up of different music stylee. More downtempo and 'electric' than his usual bass party killers. I would say not bad at all, at all. I love Lupe Fiasco's "kick push" and I love to sing along with this song (though really, me singing is the last thing you would like to hear) while listening to it and driving my car, hereby the Bassnectar's Land of the Lupes gets my seal of approval. Go grab it peeps. It's nothing big but definitely a nice, melancholic track.

Lorin hirself says: “I took the beat of a long-overdue unreleased tune called “Stretch Reflex” and melted it together with the synths and melodies from another song that was supposed to be on Underground Communication, but ended up getting saved for later. It was written as a pensive homage to the dead, the original melodics sound like a black metal song but in this version they have kind of a nice 1990’s Orb or FSOL feel to them…that sound will never get old for me! Then i took some of the prettier melodies from that song and mixed them with a Lupe Fiasco acapella (i looooove his voice) and it became one of my favorite tunes to close a party with.
So this week we give to you ‘Land of the Lupes’ which is the working title of this goofily random combination of sounds, and an unrelated homage to one of my favorite bands in the world, Land of the Loops. It will most likely be included as an instrumental on the upcoming album this fall, and that “Stretch Reflex” beat will most likely be released on my website as a DJ Tools & Loops collection.”

2. Joker - "Untitled RSN" Another essential Joker track!! Also check Flying lotus track on this split single released for Pinch's Tectonic label.

3. Boreta – Humanoid Can’t wait to see the release of this killing glitch hop track. Actually Boreta has an entire set of new smashers prepared – just check his myspace.

4. Tom Encore – Jig One of the best dubstep tracks released by a Polish producer finally available on Beatport on Nuke’em EP by Rottun Recordings! Memorize this name properly, we’ll see lots of goodies from this guy in the future, I’m positive. Check his myspace.

5. Robot Koch vs. Cerebral Vortex – After Shocks (Stagga remix) Super-heavy, inhuman metallic wobble in a totally dancefloor-oriented banger remix by Stagga.

6. Beastie Boys Body Movin (Messy Jesse reproduction) Messy Jesse added such a contagious base line to the well-known Beastie track that it’s on a constant repeat in my car’s SS.

7. Raffertie – Sugar! The master of beautiful disaster strikes again. Crazy rave on speed! Coming in a double pack with Wobble Horror, it’s one of the best releases recently. Grab it NOW!

8. Major Lazer – Hold the Line (an-ten-nae remix) Without a doubt, the best remix of Major Lazer’s Hold the Line (the first official leakage from ML’s debut album). Heavy!!!!

9. Th’Mole – How to be Cool (Ladyscraper remix). Bombastic, and fun(k)y as hell Th’Mole teaches the unaware masses how to be cool. I wish all my teachers were like him. And oh, yes, Th’Mole will play in Poland this Friday!!!! The entire Fre-Release of Th’Mole How to be cool remixes released by Chrome Kids in collaboration with Daly City Records.

10. Bassnectar – Art of Revolution (6Blocc remix) Tight, fast and heavy remix of Bassnectar’s anthem to destroy dancefloors with.

Bassnectar - Art of Revolution review [8/10]

Another big release will be off the press in a moment. American bass don, Bassnectar has finally decided to release his heavy-weight dubstep anthem Art of Revolution on a limited 12 inch vinyl (of course also available digitally) plus a set of remixes by good ole’ pirate maytees Diplo, Ghislain Poirier, 6Blocc and Product 01. Quite a nice selection I’d say. Art of Revolution features legendary Jamaican vocalist Tapper Zukie (well, Jamaican ragga vocalists seem to be in big demand recently).

I can really understand why people were grooving so much about this track when hearing it during Bassnectar’s gigs. Actually they probably heard the Super Styling smashup that is Art of Revolution mashed with Super Stylin by Groove Armada (check bassnectar.net for free download of this track). Art of Revolution is a straightforward dancefloor smasher with heavy sub-bass pulsing with energy in a trademark Bassnectar’s style. The tracks builds up nicely in a very melodic way with Jamaican vocals adding the spice to it and then – OMG – I f….g love when bass drops with such a heavy metallic force. My limbs would adore me if I only had a chance to see this track rotated live on some good sound system.

The package comes with four remixes. In his remix, Diplo added more drums making the track more steppy, deconstructed it seriously, slowed down and ‘spread’ the main bassline and gave an entire track a more slow-burning banger twist (so typical for this guy !). The result is quite nice, yet this remix misses a bit the heavy punch delivered by the original thus losing on the energy. 6Blocc in his remix twisted the original bassline making it even more deep and heavy and added a few nice, fast punches. His tight edit rolls very smoothly and I’m positive it will be heavy rinsed in DJ sets across the world. Another interesting edit comes from a Canadian Ghislain Poirier. He based his rework on a pretty contagious guitar motive over which he laid the beats and pieces of the original track speeding up, slowing and cutting them up freely creating the most complex music piece in this package. D1 Product made a 4/4 stomp banger out of Art of Revolution. Not in my taste actually, but I can imagine (and will probably attend) the parties at which this track will attract the partygoers to the dancefloor making them beam with wide smiles.

In general, this is one of the best music bundles I’ve heard in a while. In my opinion all remixes added some extra value to the anthem but still the Bassnectar’s original edit has won the battle.

Bassnectar - Superstylin Smashup

Check Bassnectar's homepage for a new free track or download it here. Superstylin Smashup is a very typical Bassnectaresque remix, this time of famous Groove Armada's anthem - Superstylin. I'd say Bassnectar has some inclinations towards roots recently he he. Nothing special IMHO, but just listen for yourselves.

Another killing mix from NewYork’s M!SHKA presenting their homies from Brooklyn - Trouble & Bass. This is definitely one of my favorite crews of the moment hitting the music scene with a bomb after bomb. The mix showcases the entire T&B family with the highlights for me being: a fantastic intro mosh by T&B, absolutely amazing bootleg remix of Prodigy’s rave anthem Everybody in the Place by AC Slater !!!! Killleerrr!!! (I remember the time in the mid 90's when I danced my ass off at rave parties to this track). And the track which I played to death in my car SS, namely Cardopusher – Double Dragon Dub. In general the selection of this M!SHKA installment is stellar and very tight, just check the tracklist.

As expected, the top quality podcast from the don himself. It's a bit more bass heavy than usual, and full of fantastic, twisted melodies, samples and vocals so typical for the Bassnectar. Bouncy, head-banging, broken-beat, low frequency and sub-bass heaven. Dubstep meets crunk hop.

This mix will definitely destroy every dancefloor. Bassnectar’s edit of “Last Night” always makes me laugh and lifts up my moods, which is quite priceless when sitting in front of your PC translating some boring corporate mumbo-jambo shit for some square headz.
