PLANET SOAP - VELVET HE1

The Italian duo Planet Soap, consisting of Federico "dsm" Monguzzi and Luca "Spectrum" De Giuli, has released today a new EP - "VELVET HE1" on vinyl and in digital format on the French label Cascade Records. This is quite an eclectic selection of contemporary bass music exploring various music genres such as jungle, garage, techno, wonky, nu-beatz or dubstep, dipped in a cosmic sauce. Starting from fantastic and breathtaking, neon synth laden 'Rhynostatic', an ultimate crowdpleaser which would even make your mom dance :) Through my favorite tune of this EP - 'I'm approaching you tonight' reminding me of the spacefaring productions by the Russian duo Demokracy (actually, Planet Soap has released a super duper evil EP with Damscracy from Democracy under the nickname of Planet Terror) and more stomping cosmic beats in 'SYFY' and 'Virus' to jungle experiments in 'Thrialine'. The title track 'Velvet He1' takes the listener on a deep-space sonic trip, where you can meet an 8-bit 'Alien from KooleYay' playing on his nintendo to the friends. Classic techno 'Vectorama' sounds old-schoolish, but thanks to the all-time classic sample and good button work delivers quite a powerful experience. All in all Planet Soap has managed to create their unique sound, though comprising elements you all probably heard many times in the past. Definitely worth checking.

Filastine - Colony Collapse EP / Loot LP (Muti Music)

Grey Filastine a.k.a. Filastine, the producer and promoter of transnational bass music, is a Los Angeles born and Barcelona based audio and visual artist. A few weeks ago he released a "Colony Collapse" EP which precedes a full length "Loot LP" to be released on Muti Music on 3rd April. This will be also the beginning of Filastine's one your world tour from Berlin to Tokyo and Brasil to Bangladesh! "Colony Collapse" features remixes by Beats Antique, Squeaky Lobster, L’Ouef Raide and Fletcher in Dub. The title track is built on a rolling, grinding bass with the acompaniament of traditional, indonesian Gamelan orchestra from Sanur, Bali (oh my sweet Bali, I left a good part of my heart in enchanting Sanur!) and featuring beautiful vocals of Nova, a rapper and singer from Malang, Indonesia. I really, really dig this mixture of occidental dubstep and oriental melodies. Beats Antique brought the track to yet another level adding even more instruments to the mix. My favorite remixer, Squeaky Lobster focused strongly on glitchy distortions and seriously cut-up beat, while refixing gamelan bells into tinkling background of an infectious and ethereal sonic trip. L'Oeuf Raide stripped down Colony Collapse into a minimal, future bass thing, whereas Fletcher in Dub, hailing from Capetown, closes the EP with dark dub full of powerful drums. In general, "Colony Collapse" is a tasty, eclectic package, proving that intelligent producers are still succesfully using dubstep formula, at least as the starting point in their music explorations.

Filastine - Colony Collapse by Post World Industries

Colony Collapse video leaves no doubt about the general concept followed by the artist in his "Loot" LP. It is filmed at sites of ecological friction, the fault lines of conflict between humanity and nature. Filastine & team entered into industrial disasters, floods, traffic snarls and scaled a mountain of garbage to show you the slow-motion apocalypse, uncomfortably close and personal.

In "Loot" Filastine looted the cofers of dubstep, moombahton, cumbia, hip hop, baile funk, rich traditional music scene and even 8-bit nintendo, mixing everything into a big transnational bass feast. In his music statement, he gathered his experience, field recordings and sound samples from travels across the globe, from Morocco through Rio de Janeiro and Asia to Barcelona. But "Loot" is definitely NOT just another trendy transnational moombahton/bass release, it is much more. A work of very self-conscious artist who not only entertains his listeners, showing them the diversity and depth of world music, but who also tries to draw their attention to painful problems of our beautiful Gaia. I believe this concept works quite well. "Loot" comes out on Tuesday, April 3rd at most of the Interweb music dealers. I really encourage you to have a listen, dear fellow Earthlings and support Filastine, because he is doing a very fine job.

Son of Kick - From Here EP + WIN TICKETS to Son of Kick's gig in Warsaw on Nov 10

Son of Kick  comes from West London and has become a permanent feature on a map of London heavy bass scene. His crazy live performances and multi-instrumentalist skills made him famous across the globe. Fans in Poland had a chance to experience his absolutely stunning live set at this year's Audioriver Festival in Płock. Thousands of people in Hybrid Tent went totally mental! He has released a few singles and great videos like e.g. Guacha, Playing the Villain or Revolution B for Way Way, Muti or Botchit and Scarper, plus several sick remixes. If you are looking for a good crossover between dubstep and hip hop as well as other bass hybrids - Son of Kick is the MAN :))

Next Thursday November, 10 Son of Kick will be a special guest of the 2nd Bday Bash of one of the best venues in Warsaw - 1500m2 do wynajęcia. Read the rest of this post to check how to win tickets to this show!!

W przyszły czwartek, 10 listopada, Son of Kick będzie specjalnym gościem 2nd Bday Bash jednej z najznamienitszych miejscówek w Warszawie - czyli 1500m2 do wynajęcia. Czytajcie dalej, aby dowiedzieć się jak wygrać bilety na tą wyjątkową balangę!!

A few days ago Son of Kick released another killing EP - From Here featuring psychic vocals of a Polish emcee RQM (currently residing in Berlin and a part of the infamous Berlin's Bass Maffia) and a set of heavy-weight remixers including: Pixelord, Rose Ryot and Night Drugs. The original From Here is a beautiful hybrid of psycho lyrical vocalizations by RQM, heavy drops, sick synths and whatnot happening in the background of this crowd-pleasing anthem. Rose Ryot offers an off-kilter, low-key refix with seriously distorted voice samples and quite weird, slow-burning beat accompanied by sick drums. Really mental tune. One of my favorite producer, Pixelord is more merciful changing the original into uplifting 2-step / future garage trip, with his trademark 8-bit synths hitting hard in the middle of the track. Dreamy and enchanting. Night Drugs definitely aims at peak of the night dancefloor experience in his smoothly rolling, party-oriented, heavy bass remix with stomping beat and talking synths. All in all From Here is a kind of release I'd like to see coming more from heavy bass / dubstep camp - superbly produced, versatile, open-minded, very catchy and entertaining. Highly recommended by Doktor Krank!!

Buy From Here on Juno, Boomkat of elsewhere in the interweb.

Speaker for the Dead - Illusionaire EP

Speaker for the Dead is a producer, DJ, multi-instrumenalist from Philly who released a few days ago his debut EP called Illusionaire. This EP is worth checking just for the title track alone which is a real orgy of crazy distortions, guitar-like riffs and heavy basslines plus overwhelming synth work. A track which perfectly fits the description "It blew my mind" :) James Sauppe is an intelligent and skillful producer and offers much more thank sick drops and bowel-twisting sonic assault. He actually creates very interesting, listener-friendly Intelligent Bass Music, each tune a fully fledged composition telling different story, using different patterns and having a lot of space for unraveling various paths for listener to follow. His music is often disturbing and unnerving, like in my personal best tunes on this EP - Illusionaire, Particle Voyager or Sunset on Mars, but also offers a cinematic 'depth', like in Nocturnal or Fade Out.

Don't hesitate peeps, grab this EP on iTunes, CD Baby, amazon and at other stores.

Planet Soap - 0349GP

Planet Soap is a heavy bass duo consisting of Federico aka"DSM" and Luca "SPECTRUM", hailing from Milan, Italy. They have released their stuff on a/o Robox Neotech and Error Broadcast. They collaborate in a project I'm eagerly anticipating to hit the scene hard  - i.e. Planet Terror which involves Damscray from Demokracy. Now, through another bass-frienly label Made in Glitch they dropped a super heavy slab of pure bass which you can grab for free. This tune will drill holes in your brain and force your co-workers to run from their posts screaming in terror if exposed. NSFW!  (I've checked, trust me on this).

Adult Swim - Unclassified

Television channel Adult Swim, which is known for promoting quality music, has just released a fantastic compilation in collaboration with Scion. Unclassified offers unreleased tracks by top-notch artists, mainly hailing from the UK Future Urban scene. The tracklist is simply breathtaking! This rare and very versatile release shows enormous and ceasless creativity of well-established producers on this most-forward looking of electronic music scenes. My personal highlighs include smashing synth-driven bass anthem Eris by Starkey (All Hail Discordia!), a liminal and ethereal sonic excursion Hexagons by Zomby, off-kilter orchestrations in SBTRKT's Golddigger, sunny neon-acid trip of Ikonika's World on Mute, Give You Time by Babe Rainbow featuring beutiful vocal of Ashley Webber, killing grimey 2-step ting in Dusk & Blackdawn's remix of Geeneus's Knife and Gun or dark, bass meditation in ultra-deep Blow out the Candle by Pinch. The rest is equally good. Unclassified is a MUST for any fan of contemporary bass / garage / urban musis. Kudos to Adult Swim for feeling the pulse right where it is throbbing most. Again.

DJ Pound - Robot Whispers (STRTEP006)

Another winner from Saturate! Records. !!! Robot Whispers by DJ Pound, hailing from San Diego, California, include a few short, but veeeery raw and heavy 'serenades' for pistons and cylinders, after listening to which most humans would run for cover :) Fortunately I love robots and though the artist presents merciless, inhumane approach to beatsmaking, exploring distant fringes of bass music, I definitely dig this slow-burning, straight-in-yer-guts sonic bombs. I grind my teeth, but after a few listenes I am totally captivated by heavy basslines and evenly distributed distortions. Well, after some time I even start feeling emotions ... Best glitch-hop (?) I've heard in a while for sure. It Takes Over, Try It or Lexfix should be dedicated to seekers of intelligent FILTH. Forget about all this shitty drilling dubstep copy-cat misery, you want a kick - let DJ Pound hit you hard and proper in an unique way.

WARNING: THIS MUSIC IS DESIGNED FOR GOOD SOUNDSYSTEM ONLY! DON'T TRY IT AT WORK ON YOUR MEASLY HEADPHONES OR, GOD FORBID, LAPTOP SPEAKERS.

DJ Pound melting audience at Low End Theory !!

Music to feed your mind and soul

Yesterday I felt like stretching my limbs and dancing, today I yearn for feeding my mind and emotions.

Starting off with Dailon and his Conscioushift EP released a few days ago on Urban Waves Records. Powerful, cosmic neon trips in crunky 8-bit staffage with absolutely amazing synths. I can't even mention my personal highlight of the 6-track EP - all of them offer top-notch listening experience and all of them have their own unique style. One of the best releases this year without a doubt.  Peeps, don't sleep on this and hurry to bandcamp. For a limited period of time you can get this for free, but I strongly encourage you to support the efforts the artist put into creation of this beautiful music.

More conscious-expanding music comes from Mexicans With Guns and amzing remix of Jorge Reyes & Samuel Zyman's Burning the Codices. Tribal chants in a beautifully rolling bass-heavy / beatz interpretation - this is the mixture I really dig. Ernest Gonzales from MWG writes: I recently watched The Other Conquest, a film by Salvador Carrasco, about the Spanish conquest of Mexico. I was inspired by a haunting song on the soundtrack called "Burning the Codices." Using the beginning part of the song with the Indian drumming and chanting, I created a remix that I'd like to share with you."

Acid House is baaaaack thanks to gendre-bending Numbers from Glasgow and DJ Pierre who presents new release in the best style of  classic '80s Acid House, to drop August, 8th on 12" and digital - check Numbers site for details. Listen to the preview of Pierre's Phantasy Club - Mystery Girl (Set Me Free) along with Seiji's refix. I LIKE! DJ Dibbler from Glasgow writes in a note accompanying this release that "acid house music will never die" - I tend to agree with him. Definitely it will outlive all this shitty / indie / boring / copy-cat rock bands with their miserable rock'n'roll which I can't stand anymore.

Pierre's Pfantasy Club - Mystery Girl (Set Me Free) w Seiji refix - clips of NMBRS9 by Numbers

Finally after powerful and successful acid trip, we steer to more laidback waters courtesy of The Walton Hoax duo (Jeroen Vande Voorde and Peter van Ewijk) hailing from Antwerp (Belgium). The Chemical Burn EP, released on !mpact Recordings offers a mixture of 2-step, UKG, dubstep, ambient and electronica with singer-songwriter vocals, which surprisingly works very well. The title track is already on heavy rotation in my player. I keep my fingers crossed for this project, we would definitely see more goodies coming from them in the future.

Video of the title track has already made quite a fuss in the interweb thanks to its mesmerizing appeal.

Inaudible - Speakerface (Studio Mix)

Proper bass treat in a mix by UK-based producer Inaudible. One of the best mid-tempo / heavy bass / twisted beatz shit mix I've heard in a while. It is a collection of his own remixes and original tracks. His music just shows that - given an intelligent and skillful producer, who knows how to squeeze proper juice from his machines - the glitch hop with heavy basslines, occasional wobbles and serious distortions do not need to be a boring, repetitious, and straight dumb, filthy affair (like 80% of what is being released or pushed recently under dubstep / glitch-hop / heavy bass tags). No sarcasm intended, just a statement of fact. Unfortunately. Enjoy this mix, it will be a real pleasure for your ears.

Sduk & Halp vs. NiT GriT & Stephan Jacobs vs. ill-esha

Seclusiasis and Slit Jockey started the series of free promo singles showcasing crossovers between the artists representing both sister labels. The first joint release is ultra synth-heavy 8-bit banger "Lung" by Sduk and Halp. Genuine dancefloor smasher of highest order! Don't sleep on this peeps. Great start to the new project.

Next collaboration is a stomping tune full of heavy and glitchy basslines and wicked female vocals coming from two champions of bass sound - NiT GriT & Stephan Jacobs who has just released a package of three tunes under the monicker of Pizza Party. Dubstep made in USofA. Not bad, not bad at all.

Grillo - Show'em Sumo EP

Show'Em Sumo is another 'concept' album from a talented beatmaker Grillo. Last year I posted his I had U Ken EP on this blog. Now Grillo returns with a collection of beats devoted to the power of Edmond Honda, a famous sumo wrestler (apparently). You can call me an ignorant but I have no idea who Honda is :) Anyway, the artist collected scraps and pieces, polished them and released as full-fledged, nice flowing  compositions which encompass quite a broad sound range and present very consistent music experience all across the board. From my personal favorite of the EP, Oicho Throw, an oneiric beat trip with 'tubular' synths, spacey Sumo Splash through 8-bit funky neon banger called Bathhouse of the Rising Sun and more heavy bass-laden The Sumo Clinic or All Oichos up to quite surprising and ass-shaking 4/4 joint - Flying Headbutt. All in all I highly recommend checking Grillo's beats - diversity is the key here!

G5 Music, a new label from Siberia has just released another fantastic gem from Russia. I was asked by good people from G5 Music to write a few words about Pulkovo Heights EP by mysterious Nocow (Alexei Nikitin) hailing from St. Petersburg. I will not repeat myself here  - you can just grab a nice pdf press booklet to learn more about Nocow and read my impressions after being exposed to big dose of his healthy melancholia.

A Baker's Dozen - Shedding Skin

The sun is shining the weather is beautiful and I feel like listening to some heaaaaaaavy bass. Here comes A Baker's Dozen, hailing from Melbourne Australia with his free EP Shedding Skin. Crispy clean, crunky, properly glitched basslines and stomping, chopped-up drumstep is what I need right now :) The best track on this EP - Non-Commital moves my body nicely and encourages me to do some office aerobics, effectively relaxing my neck and shoulder muscles. Listen to the preview below and cop the entire EP for free from A Baker's Dozen bandcamp.

Mixing Monday: Donky Pitch, Pixelord, + verb, Kuedo, Coco Bryce.

Last week brought a few interesting mixes and I decided to load them wholesale to my site. Hours of spacey synths, heavy bass and stomping beat in a mutant sauce of contemporary experimental electronica. Enjoy! (All tracklists after the jump at the bottom of the page).

Let's start the selection from the latest, super hot mix from the Lord of All Pixels i.e. Pixelord. In Big UP's podcast he offers top-notch selection featuring Alexey's own stuff and remixes, a great Zeppy Zep's remix of Spellbound by a Polish producer hailing from my hometown - Tom Encore plus huge Krampfhaft tune and f...g heavy lazers from Naive Machine and loads more. Definitely the mix not to be missed!

Big Up Podcast 44 - Pixelord

Donky Pitch has recently stormed the scene with their releases and this is another smashing radio show, featuring an exclusive mix from LA's Groundislava and a short mix by Ghost Mutt. The selection is eclectic as usual featuring tons of unreleased stuff from e.g. Slugabed, Jonwayne, Blue Daisy, Nasty Nasty, Nightwave, KRSUR, 813 and much more.
Just Groundislava's mix alone is worth downloading this 3-hour monster. He has recently dropped an amazing self-titled debut on Friends of Friends which is one of my favorite releases this year. Expect more words about this on DrKrank's blog soon. Preview and cop the album on boomkat

Donky Pitch - Hivemind vol. 7 f. Groundislava and Ghost Mutt

Now is the time for off-kilter synth bonanza courtesy of Skwee Master from Holland - Coco Bryce in a mix for glitch-hop.pl. Absolutely wicked stuff! No tracklist, unfortunately :(

GLITCH-HOP.PL_Podcast#07_by_COCO_BRYCE by Mash Machine

Slapping and cybarblapping mix from + verb, an artist consistently developing his own unique style full of heavy basslines and extensive melody lines, glitchy and touching at  the same time. I have been his fan for years, and as usual this guy never disappoints. This mix is the latest installment in his music career, offering a preview of several unreleased tracks. Expect big things coming from + verb on, among others Robox Neotech. And don't forget to invite him to a town near you for a sick lazer set. Return on Investment guaranteed!

+verb - Cyberblap2011 Sahn Mixtape by +verb

Kuedo a.k.a. Jamie Vex'd in a short mutant wonky mix with lots of twisted hip-hop beats and rhyming for Belgrade's Svetlana Industries. This is one of these artists whom I have followed since my early dubstep years and each of his 'faces', either as a part of Vex'd duo or solo as Jamie Vex'd or now Kuedo, is inspiring and interesting and shows great sensitivity and feeling of the urban electronic scene. I'm anxiously waiting for his new releases.

Bass Science - Slip N Side

A year after their previous release, Bass Science returns to Made In Glitch and again unleash loads of ill bass and stomping beat on the general public. Their EP Slip'n'Side featuring remixes by David Starfire and Mindelixir will be available on Addictech on 24th April. The title track is a clever bass-driven banger which does not attack the listener with glitched-to-the-max sonic assult but offers a sound story unfolding very nice from the first note. I'd really wish hearing more of this type of approch to production and composition building from the glitch hop / heavy bass/ dubstep camp. David Starfire's remix (f. I-Catching) of Mochipet's Godzilla New Year is still one of my favorite anthems, thus I am positive Slip'N'Slide's remix by them will be killing!! Pretty excited to hear the entire thing next week.

Let's Go Crazy (Samples Remix)

It's been quite a while since I posted music by one of my favorite glitch hop producers - Ben Samples from the Denver Bass Squadron. His gangsta bass-heavy and glitchy synth remix of Let's Go Crazy helped me boost my very low energey level on this f***g Wednesday morning at my desk in the corpo tower of polished steel processing tons of boring business mumbo-jumbo. I really prefer Samples's serious head-nodding biznis!!!!

Damscray - Make Me Juke

I have ambivalent feelings about the juke (house) as such, never know how to do a proper footwork on the dancefloor - ha ha. The sound patterns used by producers seem to be too repetitious in a longer run. There are of course some interesting artists hailing e.g. from France or Benelux (Moveltraxx family) and I like ghetto house / bastard juke aesthetics when combined with some other form of contemporary IDM music into a more variable music textures (e.g.: Schlachthofbronx, many producers from tigerbeat6). But something changed recently and in 2010 juke sound started gradually leaking into Europe / UK scene adding up another flavor to already twisted underground urban patchwork there (even ending up on some comp released by Planet Mu!!). Will Juke replace another stomping heavy-bass genre which now seems to be dead - I mean Bassline? Will we soon talk and write about UK J as an equal sibling to UK G or UK F? Honestly, I doubt it but trying new avenues in music is always better then copying others, me thinks. There are more and more examples of successful flirts with juke recently. Damscray is one of them definitely.

Damscray (representing 1/2 of my favorite duo of synth slayers from Alfa Centauri ) has just released a super-duper juke EP featuring 6 original tracks and 2 absolutely gorgeous remixes (one of them totally mental!). Just listen to a super fat Stay High sounding like seriously accelerated glitch hop joint with dark, underlying bassline - a dancefloor killer for sure! One of the most powerful and straight-in-yer-face tunes I've heard this year! My personal highlight of the entire release. Clearly, Damscray uses juke aesthetics to experiment with his fancy gear moving from mutant beatz, dubstep and wonky to juke, mixing it all like a devil in one big post-post-something cauldron, like in sick Warriors or Itz Darkness or extremely dubstep'ish - Make Me Juke.  A 'cannonical' juke tune - Smellin Feelin  has been robo- reslipped by +verb into wobbley affair with amazing crispy synths. TUNE! But the real gut-twisting, totally mental trip awaits the listener in Lakritze's remix of Warriors. Though I heard this tune before it never ceases to grip my neurons and give me creeps! I'll play this tune to my wife next time she pisses me off :)  All in all, a very refreshing release, definitely worth checking even if you are not a big fan of ghetto / juke sound. Highly recommended by Doktor Krank.

Juakali - Freak You Back EP f. Plastician, Stagga & Monky, Tes La Rok, DLX

One of my favorite emcees, Jauakali will drop a very interesting EP - Freak You Back at the beginning of February on Foreign Familiar label. Fans of deep bass and dark vibes should really check this stuff. The title track produced by Plastician is a hot burning, dark roller with super low subs. Juakali's lyrics are delivered in mesmerizing way fitting sooooooo well with the synths and basslines I can only nod my head in appreciation. Finnish dubstep king Tes La Rok added skanking stabs and great drums and the melody that weaves smoothly on top, next to Juakali's lyrics, is simply enchanting. DLX aka Doctor Lazarus X, hailing from L.A., resident of the famous SMOG dubstep monthly, tweaked and glitched the levels on his gear up a few notes adding stomp and filth to the original turning this into typical, growling dancefloor monster. The real treat awaits at the end in Tha Chillski, where Cardiff's finest Stagga & Monky create a genre-bending, grimey riddim, with fantastic, trademark Stagga bassline, slowed-down 'tropical' drums and video game bleeps and beeps. They communicate with Juakali perfectly. DA TUNE!!! EP will be released in all formats, includin vinyl 12". Highly recommended by Doktor Krank.
