DOKTOR KRANK'S RELEASE OF THE MONTH - 9 out of 10***

Damscray (Albert Khasanov) from Russian Super Bass Duo, Demokracy, has just released his solo work - Blot Method EP. Another sure winner from Siberian Label, G5 Music, distributed worldwide by Alpha Pup. If I am to describe this versatile release in one sentence, I'd say this is oriental music produced by a modern shaman for all mechanical beings. I read a lot of SF stuff and I can easily imagine this music as a perfect score to stories about intelligent AI's in post-human starfaring reality. This is as soulless, cold and nerdy as electronic music can ever be, yet full of 'emotions' but of more teethgritting, aggressive and synthetic type. Which I really like! All humans are indeed robots but built with organic matter :) As a matter of fact, most humans live their entire lives in robotic stupor, fed with media celebrity pulp, never stepping out of their reality tunnels manufactured by the Mainstream Totality. Unfortunately, most of such robots will never hear this stuff, which is a real shame.

The beginning and closing tracks staple together four hard, raw and veeeeery digital tunes thrown by Damscray at listeners with enormous and totally consistent power. "Sandworm" makes a beautiful oriental introduction to mechanical heaviness. "Blot Method" and "Headplate" are amazing symphonies of silly hydraulic pistons & gears, with unnverving synths and distorted basslines which any robot would simply love at first hearing. Steampunk par excellence! A f***k anthem and my personal highlight, "Bug Detector" will not only detect all bugs in your sytem but will definitely teach them how to dance, whereas "One Finger Punch" will punch holes in your mind with every drop and ass-kicking drums.  All ending in a kind of bass-heavy anti-climax in "The Rhythm Room". I strongly recommend Blot Method EP. Don't sleep on this people, one of the best releases this year.

… What’s the Use …

Evil and darkness can hardly be more appealing than in the music produced by a mysterious whiz kid Lorn from Illinois, on his absolutely mind twisting debut Nothing Else released on 8 June 2010 on FlyLo’s Brainfeeder. Finally, after a few years in the making! It is a very peculiar collage of melancholy electronica, hypnotic beats and bleeps riding on a very diverse, enchanting synths which draw the listener into the bleached out world where sun never sets, because it has never had a chance to rise

This is the music to be fully immersed into; cutting deep into your neural system, at first threatening, scary and unnerving and then as if breaking an internal fuse set against this type of assault, it takes you for a ride through beautifully twisted other-dimensional wasteland inhabited by souls yearning for TRUE, REAL and UPLIFTING experience, trying to elevate themselves from the all-encompassing urban decay and numbness. Being a fan of post-apocalyptic books, movies and games I buy Lorn’s set-up wholesale, including neurosis and intense feeling of loneliness and despair which seems to prevail across the entire album. I perfectly understand this type of neurotic melancholia – I feel this way more and more often recently. This is the music created by a troubled soul for troubled souls.

However, Nothing Else should not be interpreted only in terms of moral dualism of good vs. evil or as a nihilistic manifesto. It offers much more music-wise and concept-wise. Lorn is a fantastic beatmaker and his tracks are multi-layered compositions with all the details polished like chrome. Harsh beat and dubby sub-bass mixed with touching (or cutting) synths are perfect tools used to create the music piece you really want to start all over again after the first hearing. Moving from a much-too-short introduction of Grandfather, through military funeral march in the most depressing tune – Army of Fear (it should be rather called Army of Dead), mad and repulsive Automaton, through acid-laden Voids to reach the depths of hell of tormented souls in Tomorrow. Then, Lorn seems to release some of the tension and finally gain some peace of the mind, in the beautiful Cherry Moon or my personal highlight of the entire album, i.e. energetic and upbeat Greatest Silence.

The closing, uncompromising track What’s the use is a real ode to melancholy. The moment when the distorted ghost vocal drops gives me nightmarish creeps, but I would not call this an unpleasant feeling, on the contrary. It is very REAL and RAW and reaches deeply into the depths of my soul. The "what's the use" phrase has been haunting me for weeks and when I listen to this track I have tears in my eyes. And these are tears of joy and sadness at the same time.

One should cherish such works of art as this type of experience has become a luxury product in the totality of our mediated and artificial environment full of mediocre copy-cats and untalented mainstream starlets. Take you all this record and listen to this, the reward will come sooner than you expected.

On May 7th, my favorite beatmaker Robot Koch released Listen to them Fade EP (Project Mooncircle). One of the kind, vintage electronica, where dreamy female vocal meets strange sound samples, surfing through the multi-layered, moody compositions to the accompaniment of constantly tempo-changing breaks and totally sick drums and pads (Brujeria, Like Rain). This time analog and organic sounds seems to win the battle with machine keyboards and the result of their fight, the twisted, dark but very very lively beat and dubby vibe has connected with my emotions instantly! This is the record to be fully immersed into, rich with mind flavors and archaic, tribal goodness. As usual in case of innovative style of Robot Koch, this music is hard to describe and extremely versatile, but the artist managed perfectly to keep the entire 6-piece concise and complete. Though I can spot my personal highlights - Brujeria with oneiric singing by Grace and pulsating, dubby bassline which has been on a constant repeat in my player for a month or other-dimensional, trippy True riding on a squashed beat - this is the release to be digested in full from the first unsettling notes of the title track to the surreal sonic jam in Now. Listen to them Fade has been directly influenced by 2 months spent by Robot Koch in Mexico, where he collaborated again with a very talented Mexican singer Grace. I hope they will continue their successfull cooperation in a similarly inspiring environment and the results will be even more astonishing in the full-length album by Robot Koch to drop on Project Mooncircle in October this year.  Can't wait!!

Another great mix from Bay Area producer and DJ - Carly D. I really dig her selection, DJ skills and music sensitivity. She proved it in a previous, dubstep mix I posted on my blog, she proves it again in this special set put together for the DoLab's mixtape contest. The mix consists of tracks by artists who will all be playing at Lightning in a Bottle Festival this year.

I really really wish someone finally invented a teleporter to be able to haul my ass across the pond in no time to experience live all these fantastic producers I write about on my blog. I will donate 10 free tickets to the forthcoming Illum Sphere gig in Warsaw in exchange for a fast hop to California :) to the first inventor who presents me with a prototype of such a machine (can be untested yet). We could really use such an invention in the current Europe's dark age of Volcanic Eruption.

Great mix by a guy called Lobbie, hailing from Oakland (CA).  A fantastic mashup of midtempo whompy, experimental EDM, dubstep, crunk, dnb and what not. Ranging from Autechre, Luke Vibert, Boards of Canada or Amon Tobin through Mochipet, Heyoka, 16bit to Loops Hunt (Yeesseee!!), NastyNasty, Slugabed and even Mr. Oizo, Krazy Baldhead or Busy P. Pretty eclectic selection if you ask me. What is most important, Lobbie very skilfully mixed all these components into a smoothly flowing electronic orgy of old school meets new school aesthetics. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! This eccentric combination has the force of pulling invisible strings attached to my innards not letting them rest even for a sec. Violins and clavichords, distorted guitars, wicked movie samples and heavy bass create a real Plunderphonic Orgy. One of the kind for real! L.A.’s own Kutmah is even more insane and intense. Angry rapping and sub-harmonic beats complement perfectly the Gaslamp Killer’s set bringing the podcast to yet another mother****g level.

FIRE AND ICE IN THE MIX cmd/ctrl vs. Shlomo vs. Mugwort

If end of the year can be treated as an indication of the forthcoming year, 2010 looks very very promising for electronic music community. Just listen to these 3 recent mixes ranging from downtempo to midtempo and sometimes entering the freetempo regions. This is the showcase of the future featuring tracks by young and extremely talented artists with beats that has never been more eclectic and intricate, building fantastic sonic landscapes in which you can immerse wholly creating your own un-realities in your mind. Ultimate listening experience for cold winter evenings at home. This is no wobbly, whompy and pounding dancefloor stuff, this is just good, emotional music.

Let's start from a crispy cold mix by the cmd/ctrl from Montreal, Canada for Mondayjazz. Waiting for the winter rides smoothly on a downtempo, 'West Coast' vibe (e.g. FlyLo, Teebs, Alex B)  while featuring also more wonky, glitchy and crunky tunes from Europe or Canada (like e.g. my personal track of the year - Hard to Find by Robot Koch, Lorn and Lunice remixes, HudMo, Mike Slott) and tons of great IDM. Apart from the names you should be already acquainted with,  the tracklist is packed with the artists you should absolutely check if you have never heard about them. L.A. - based youngster Shlomo , Dimlite, UK's Mussck in a fantastic MattB's remix, Pudge, DevonWho, Flako, Mount Kimbie (releasing stuff on Scuba's Hotflush)  and finally  the notorious and mysterious collective from Brussels called Herrmutt Lobby (check their stuff on Eat Concrete). You will definitely hear more great music released by them in 2010. Remember then who pointed you in their direction HA HA HA :)

All in all, one of the best mixes I've heard in 2009!!!!

Finally, I'll throw some fire and add more transcendental space and ethereal vibe to cold electronic beats and synths of the two former mixes. Mugwort released a great mind-food music excursion into Far East and West Coast to the rthythm of psychedelic dubs. I am a real sucker for such a trippy downtempo stuff (mutating into heavier mid-tempo occasionally). Think SleepyHead, Heyoka, Knowa KnowOne, Beats Antique, PANTyRAiD, Ooah, Shpongle, Mimosa and you'll get the picture. Beautiful oriental vocals (fantastic Niyaz in Ghazal), trippy bhangra step of Subswara with Juakali on mike, etno anthem of PANTyRAiD, Eprom, Bluetech and edIT tunes are just a few highlights of this perfectly flowing mix. Cop it, throw away your concerns and worries and let the music take over your reality.

Składanka wydana przez Echodub pt. Anechoic Chaber to bardzo ciekawa inicjatywa nowego kolektyw na scenie, prowadzonego przez młodego Alexa vel DFRNT. Zwrócił moją uwagę kilka miesięcy temu swoimi świetnymi miksami a potem też remisami i produkcjami, w których w bardzo przyjemnie wpadający w ucho i hipnotyzujący sposób łączył ciężkie subbassowe brzmienia z ambientowymi i chill’outowymi strukturami i idm’owymi melodiami. A tu proszę parę miesięcy później DFRNT staje się spiritus movens Echodub i serwuje smakowite danie skierowane do wszystkich wielbicieli inteligentnej elektroniki a zwłaszcza atmosferycznego dubstepu (a raczej dub-techu albo jak kto woli tech-dubu). To się nazywa przeć do przodu! Słuszny kierunek ma ten kolektyw, jak to mawiano w poprzedniej epoce. Efekt finalny może nie zwala z nóg, ale jako przestrzenna muzyka tła, do słuchania w czasie pracy czy wykonując domowe robótki broni się całkiem nieźle. Trzeba też pamiętać, że większość z muzyków to świeża, młoda krew na scenie, z czasem może być tylko lepiej.

Według słów jednej z osób zaangażowanych w projekt, przerósł on najśmielsze oczekiwania samych twórców jeżeli chodzi o ilość i jakość materiału. 14 producentów prezentuje 20 utworów które z grubsza można określić mianem intelligent dub-tech music. Szczerze mówiąc po pierwszych zajawkach dotyczących tej płyty spodziewałem się nieco cięższych i bardziej dubstepowo / dubowo zorientowanych utworów. Zwłaszcza, że ci producenci, których dokonania wcześniej znałem, czyli DFRNT, king slaFF, Sines, HxdB czy nasz polski przedstawiciel w tym gronie – Substep Infrabass, kojarzą mi się jednoznacznie z dusbstepem, chociaż faktycznie z jego bardziej atmosferyczną odmianą. Niestety, wybranie (świadome albo nie) takiej lżejszej i bardziej techno zorientowanej konwencji nie wyszło na dobre całej kompilacji.

Płyta wydaje się być podzielona na dwie części, pierwszą – spokojniejszą, ambientową i tech-dubową, niestety zdecydowanie za monotonną i pozbawioną kawałków, które zostają na dłużej w pamięci. Słyszałem takie kawałki setki razy i poza dobrym warsztatem brakowało mi tu czegoś oryginalnego na co moje ucho zareagowałoby pozytywnym zaskoczeniem. Chyba że taki był świadomy zamysł – stworzyć rozbiegówkę do ciekawszych, mroczniejszych i bardziej rozbudowanych utworów w drugiej połowie, która zaczyna się od jednej z perełek czyli świetnego Silent Q – HxdB. A dalej dwa porządne kawałki king slaFF i najlepszy moim zdaniem numer na płycie czyli Sines – Test Four, klimatyczny, świetnie rozwijający się ‘roller’ trochę w oldschoolowym stylu, z pięknym niskim basem i nu-jazzową trąbką i pianinkiem oraz zaskakującym echo-wokalem. Prawdziwy Echo Dub! Bardzo cieszy, że jednym z kawałków, które doskonale się bronią na tle kilkunastu artystów z całego świata, jest The Entity, naszego rodzimego producenta Substep Infrabass. Mroczny klimat, będący jego znakiem firmowym, i intrygująca linia melodyczna stanowiłyby doskonałe tło do mrożącego krew w żyłach horroru albo sceny lądowania statku kosmicznego na dziewiczej planecie.

Niestety kawałki autora całego projektu, czyli DFRNT na Echodub nie bardzo mi podeszły, brzmią za bardzo ambientowo i niezbyt oryginalnie. Na pewno stać go na więcej a w przyszłości nie raz jeszcze uraczy słuchaczy dobrą muzyką. Z artystów, których nie miałem przyjemności słyszeć warto wymienić Solar Constant i Foiledtorsos (chropowaty i surowy Ultra Analog Dub). Generalnie jak dla mnie Anechoic Chamber nie jest wielkim przełomem muzycznym, chociaż płyta spotkała się z bardzo ciepłym przyjęciem słuchaczy. Tym niemniej przy wszystkich wymienionych tutaj wadach warto po nią sięgnąć i najlepiej wysłuchać w całości, a na koniec docenić najważniejszą moim zdaniem cechę tej produkcji czyli autentyczną inspirację twórców i ich dążenie do wyjścia poza muzyczne schematy i ograniczenia. Z wielką uwagą będę śledził rozwój Echodub i jego członków, bo zdecydowanie na to zasługują.

Anechoic Chamber issued by Echodub is a very interesting initiative of a new collective on the scene, run by a young Alex vel DFRNT. He drew my attention a few months ago with his original mixes, then remixes and his own productions in which he combined – in a very ear-catching and hypnotizing way – heavy sub-bass sounds with ambient and chill-out structures on top (or below) IDM-like tunes. And what a news! A few months later DFRNT emerges as a spiritus movens of Echodub and serves a delicious takeaway for all the fans of intelligent electronic music, and in particular atmospheric dubstep (or should I call it dub-tech or if you wish tech-dub). This is real moving forward! This collective is absolutely on the right track. Maybe, the final effect is not breathtaking, but as a spacious background music, to be listened to when at work or doing your homework it sounds quite good. We should not forget that most of the musicians are fresh, young blood on the scene, from now on they can only improve.

According to one of the persons involved in the project, it outgrew the highest expectations of the authors themselves as regards the quantity and quality of the material. 14 producers presents 20 tracks, which more or less could be defined as intelligent dub-tech music. Honestly speaking, after the first news about this release, I have expected slightly tougher and more dubstep / dub oriented tunes. The more so, as the producers with whose work I am familiar, i.e. DFRNT, king slaFF, Sines, HxdB or a Polish representative in this group– Substep Infrabass, I clearly associate with dubstep, although it’s true that with its more atmospheric side. Unfortunately, selecting (deliberately or not) such a softer and more techno oriented convention has not been very successful looking across the entire compilation.

The release seems to be divided into two parts, a first one – calmer and more ambient and tech-dub oriented, unfortunately it is too monotonous and missing any tracks which would stay longer in memory. I have heard such tunes hundreds of times and apart from quite good production skills they lacked something original to which my ears would react with positive surprise. Unless, it was a deliberate intention – to create a kind of start-up to more interesting, darker and extended tracks in the second part which starts from one of the highlights of the release, namely the great tune Silent Q by HxdB. Later we have two solid tracks by king slaFF and IMHO the best track on this record, that is Test Four by Sines, atmospheric, fantastically building up ‘roller’ in a slightly oldschool style, with beautiful low bass and nu-jazz trumpet and piano plus suprising echo-vocal. A genuine Echo Dub! I am very pleased to note that one of the tracks which sound great among productions of several artists from across the world, is The Entity of our Polish producer Substep Infrabass. Dark mood, being his trademark, and an intriguing melody line would create a perfect background to some horror movie or a scene of landing of a spaceship on some virgin, unknown planet.

Unfortunately, the music by the mastermind behind the entire project, i.e. DFRNT on Echodub somehow have not convinced me. They sound too ambient and are not that original. Definitely, he can do more and I am sure that in the future he will deliver great music to listeners. Out of the artists who are completely new to me, it is worth mentioning Solar Constant and Foiledtorsos (coarse and raw Ultra Analog Dub). In general, in my opinion Anechoic Chamber is not a big music breakthrough, although the release has met with a very warm reception of listeners. Nevertheless, with all the drawbacks I have mentioned above, it is worth downloading this record and preferably listening to it in full while at the end appreciating the most important feature of this production IMHO, namely an authentic inspiration of the artists and their desire for going beyond the formulaic music and restrictions of one genre of music. I will very closely track the development of Echodub and its members, as they really deserve this.
