Lazers & Neons & Mutant Beats

I feel like slaying a few throats with clean cutting lazers. There are so many dumb-ass targets around me I would have serious problems from whom I should start. Pakistani Starfleet Commando figthing Gigantic Dove Invaders are my heroes this week :). To do my job properly I need appropriate music score. Here is the selection of latest & gratest in neon lazers. Enjoy

HALP, hailing from the Netherlands, will soon release (23rd May Boomkat) a fantastic EP Gazzillian Yeers, where lazers par excellence meticulously spray the listeners and slow burning neon synths, 8-bit distortions and twisted melodies complete the act of destruction. Definitely one of the best releases in May!

This Friday, I will attend a super great U Know Me Records night at Cafe Kulturalna featuring Robot Koch and fLako !!!! Listen to this sick  mash-up of Lil'' Wayne's Stuntin' Like My Daddy vs. Robot Koch vs. fLako. Treasure!

Mochipet brings more super heavy lazers in his remix of Mike Jone's "My 64". Glitchy as shit mash up full of great samples (one you'd recognize immediately) and unique, one-of-a-kind Mochipet's slabs and drums of pure liquid bass. Quality as usual!

Graintable, a cool dude from Portland is about to release new tracks on Simplify Recordings and CarCrashSet. Glitchy, crunky and melodic, the way I like! Check it out:

Finally ultra heavy lazers courtesy of Bart Tyrpien a.k.a. Bartlomein, He has just released his first EP with self-explaining title :) Let Lazers Guide You In.  A guy born in Poland who migrated some years ago to the USofA delivers 5 tracks with glitched to the max, pulsating basslines and nicely woven vocal samples, plus hard pads and drums - definitely the music which works best with big party soundsystems. Recommended!

HUDSON MOHAWKE - ROS KWAME WAKE UP MIX

Hudson Mohawke, beatz charlatan from Glasgow and a wunderkid of acqua crunk wonky movement dropped a very nice mix riding on neon synths and totally twisted post hip-hop beatz in Ros Kwame show on BBC 1. Shining buttons work and serious head-nodding bizninz plus uplifting sunny vocalizations - all meet here in a typical HudMo collage. Highly recommended!

STARKEY - Resident Advisor Podcast .204

Well, I listen to Starkey a lot and still can't get enough of his extended, spacey synths, out-of-this-planet melodies and sick bass. This guy really brings dubstep (and a few other genres in it) to the next level, maybe not for all tastes but my neural set-up seems to get a perfect rapport with Mr. Street Bass music offering. I don't know whether he is a pioneer of the so-called "2nd wave dubstep producers" (the term coined in this article), but I do now he eascapes easy pigeonholing, showing immense creativity and music sensitivity. The mixtape selection is killing as usual and includes a few of my favorite recent tunes. Apart from Starkey's solo work and remixes, I'd mention Knight Riderz remix of a killing Schlachthofbronx anthem Ayoba, Grimelock's remix of Let the Bass by a Belgian producer Alchemyst, filthy tunage by NastyNasty or absolutely, ridiculously senseless Zombies by Kanji Kinetic. There is more, just listen.

It's great that Starkey's podcast appeared on the Resident Advisor's portal, which is rather associated with more minimal, techno, house or possibly dub-tech vibe. New outlet for exposing Starkbots's sound may only bring new converts, even if some hardcore fans of 'minimal sound' (??) were slightly or quite straight-in-yer-face disappointed (see the comments section for the podcast).

OUT RUN THIS - Halfmanhalf vs. Low Limit feat. Copywrite

HALFMANHALF, an MC from Portland has just sent me a hot track which is a preview of the album he is cooking up together with his homie, Low Limit of Lazer Sword fam. "OUT RUN THIS" also features COPYWRITE and the cuts on the song come from Davis Cleveland. Serious head-nodding biznis guaranteed.  Production style, crunky synths and cut-up vocal samples are definitely LazerSwordian.

The new uber-label Numbers on its new website has just released a lazer-friendly remix of Dreas 2 Sweat's regular Rod Lee from Baltimore, cooked by none other than Low Limit from Lazer Sword. Cop this shit, it's hot in this cold synth-driven way.

LAZER SWORD - FACT MIX 133

LAZER SWORD - FACT MIX 133

I have been waiting for this eagerly since last week  when I've learnt that my favorite psych-disco blap hop combo of Lando Kal and Low Limit a.k.a. Lazer Sword is going to drop a new propa mix in Fact Mix series. Already 20 minutes into their work my neck and shoulders hurt like hell and I realized I push the keys on my laptop in unison with the sick rhythm of grimey electro funk out skunky lazer shit - the sequence of Terror Danjah-Gucci Mane-DVA-Slugabed tracks in the middle is f...g insane!! LL and LK break your expectations of what comes next each time, twisting the beat, moving with ease between r'n'b vocals and dirty drops and kicks, electro whomp and oldschool grime or hip-hop anthems, mixing all the shit in a kind of electro cauldron. This time they serve even more eclectic music, including nice joints from their homies  like Mr. Dibiase, Zackey Force Funk (check a joint y ZFF with a Polish producer Piotruś Pan here), Machine Drum through heavy weight hip-hop to, well ... enought of that - just LISTEN. Definitely one of the best mixes this year!!!!

Quite surprisingly the mix includes only a two or three tracks by the boys themselves, they rather prefer to show their fantastic selector skills than promote their own music. Anyawy, anyone intending to rinse Lazer Sword's own stuff should definitely cop their super hot EP The Golden Handshake, recently released on the new Glasgow-based uber-label NUMBERS. 3D Action Jackson by Lando Kal or Where You Been 7.5 by Low Limit are simply THE SHIT (sorry for the repetitions but as you know I had quite an insane week at work and still have not recovered from my then-robot self). Expect a proper review of this EP on my blog soonish.

PIXELORD - LUCID FREAKS

Thanks to the tip from one of the best blogs out there - let's get digital, I had a real pleasure to acquaint myself with super fat, wonky 8-bit neon sound of Pixelord from Russia. The debut 4-track EP "Lucid Freaks" by Alexey Devyanin, a Moscow-based veteran of experimental music, best-known for his Gultskra Artikler moniker, is simply too good to be kept buried in the vast ocean of blogosphere. I've never heard of this guy, but from now on I write down his name waiting for more stuff coming soon (like already announced remix EP). Pixelord delivers twisted hip hop beats and lots of 8-bit, digital bleeps and beeps, all bathed in Lucky-Me's neon synths. The production is super tight and fans of Slugabed, Loops Haunt, Shlohmo, HudMo should check this release. It's even difficult for me to mention best tracks as they are all top quality. Definitely an artist to watch in 2010.

BLOGGERTRONIX MIX VOL. 5

BLOGGERTRONIX MIX - VOL.5 by Bloggertronix

Great mix from the Bloggertronix crew! Electro bop, cumbia, EDM, crunk and glitch served in a very uplifting and uber funky way. The mix flows like a spring rivulet on a sunny day stroll high in the mountains. Listening to it I felt like going for a walk, unfortunately at my work when I leave my cubicle my options are rather limited - toilet, canteen, smoking area, no rivulets, no mountains, no sun :(
The mix includes a few of my favorite tracks from the recent weeks: Robot Koch's tune from Death Star Droid, Sammy Bannana's remix of Kid Cudi song, mesmerizing Filewile anthem, Two Fingers,  El Zombie - Fauna in Dj Disque remix (most frequently played cumbia track on my SS in the car!), Siriusmo's crazy shit, Notic Nastic - well I will soon mention the entire tracklist. Grab it while it's hot! Highly recommended.

Nasty Nasty - The Reef (incl. Slugabed remix)

Oh boy, this release will be huge. Jasper Reeder aka NastyNasty will soon release a single The Reef on Frite Nite, as a first step to his full-length Kingdom Come. This neon wonky banger is extremely hard to classify, but one thing is certain - it's dirty and big and has a huge effect on the listener (I hope). The package will also include smashing street bass remix by a young UK bad bowy - Slugabed.Cant wait to see this released. Listen!!

MARY ANNE HOBBS - BBC 1 EXPERIMENTAL - 11/05/09 CONNOISSEURS LABEL SHOWCASE

Mary Anne Hobbs – Experimental 2009 11 05 Soul Motive, Modern Love and Numbers [Hotfile]

Connoisseurs Label Showcase presenting three labels: Soul Motive from Bristol, Modern Love from Manchester and finally Numbers from Glasgow. The best Mary Anne Hobbs show in months. You know YOU WANT THIS BADLY!!!!!

Soul Motive is represented by very emotive and dreamy, exclusive mix from Eleven Tigers. Fantastic listening experience within Bristol’s dub-tech / IDM imaginarium, including Eleven Tigers original material as well as Perverelist and Hyetal tunes. I’m not a big fan of dub-tech myself but this piece of music is really, really ‘touching’. As sung by a female in one of the tracks by Eleven Tigers this mix is Driving my crazy driving my crazy… Eleven Tigers will release his new single in January 2010 with Perverelist remix on a flipside. Already in December, Soul Motive plans the new releases by Headhunter and Geom. Watch out!

Then comes another nice mix, this time from Manchester’s label – Modern Love, which was heavily rinsed by M.A.H. in her show in the past. Including only unreleased material by among others Claro Intelecto, Andy Stott, Andrea, Milli, Hate. This mix is also quite OK, although for me the weakest one out of the three presented.

As in a proper thriller, the real bomb awaits the listener at the end. The third mix has really blew my mind. This is the showcase mix for a new Glasgow label – Numbers which was created after converging Wireleblock, Stuffrecords and Dress 2 Seat. The mix includes tons of exclusive release for next year by e.g. Low Limit, Lando Kal, Rustie, Slugabed, Redinho, Ghosts on tape, Hudson Mohawke, Emvee, L-vis 1990, Taz Buckfaster, Deadboy. Fuck me! So many great artists on the fore-front of electronic music gathered in one place! If this is not the best label of 2010, I’ll be damned. Actually the first release in 2010 – Golden Shake EP will be by none other than our old homies: Low Limit and Lando Kal from Lazer Sword!!! followed by Redinho’s “Bare blip” and Taz Buckfuster’s stuff. Oh boy I can hardly wait. I am absolutely positive this will blow my mind. Numbers’ label launch party took place on 6 November 2009, with Lazer Sword live, and world debut of the new Rustie live show– this was the great party I’m sure. Just a few days before we had a chance to meet and see the Lazer Sword slaying the crowd here in Poland and adding Rustie to the bill is really too much, he he. I keep my fingers crossed for Numbers.

Debruit in Obiekt Znaleziony, Warsaw 23 October 2009

This Autumn looks great for fans of future hip-hop beats in Poland. A week before mega gig by Lazer Sword in Białystok, another artist of the 'beat' movement which can be loosely associated with Flying Lotus / Madlib / Modeselektor / Rustie sound will play in Warsaw. Debruit, French maestro of glitched IDM and futurist crunky synths will perform a 1.5 hour live act as a part of "Let's Post Funk" event (actually the name of his recent 12'') in Obiekt Znaleziony in Warsaw the coming Friday, 23rd of October. Debruit is part of the Musique Large roster together with e.g. Fulgeance, another young gun of the French electro / beat who has won me over with a few recent releases. Expect some unpredictable, but carefully controlled crunky chaos full of strange voice samples and future hip hop beats. If the names like Dorian Concept, Madlib, J Dilla, Dabrye, Daedelus, Flying Lotus, Rustie ring a bell, you definitely should not miss such an opportunity! This is the future of electronic music, don't be lame and lazy, be part of it! Once again, kudos to Kwazar for pushing the music scene in Warsaw and Poland. I want more :)

As a foretaste listen to this recent mix by Debruit for Fact Magazine.

STARKEY - FACT MIX VOL. 91

STARKEY - FACT MIX VOL. 91

Although I don't share Starkey's fondness of autotune at all, I definitely share his music taste and really dig the aesthetics of his tracks and mixes. His peculiar kind of heavy bass instrumental grime called Street Bass with fantastic use of synths and multi-layerd sonic structures always works for me. Fact Mix just confirms the strength of the stark man. The mix includes a few super dope Starkey productions and remixes with my personal numero uno which is actually an opening track (after this irritating autotune bot) - namely Fourth Dimension. Without a doubt, the best Starkey tune since Gutter Music!! Rain City and Knob Twiddler are also excellent. Next highlight is Starkey's collaboration with Budy Lezlee and Cerebral Vortex. Slugabed remix of Space Boots is another hottie. Pacheko in 6Blocc treatment will freeze your ass with cold robotic bassline and sick riddim. PANTyRAiD, Misk, Stagga, Ebola ... I could actually mention the entire tracklist. One of the most solid and entertaining mixes I've heard recently.

RELEASE OF THE MONTH 9/10 ****

I officially announce October as the Lazer Sword month. In two weeks they will deliver serious damage to the club venue here in Poland and now they have finally released their first vinyl, a foretaste to the full length album dropping soon.

Gucci Sweatshirt 12" shows in a nutshell a broad spectrum of music inspirations and explorations of this talented duo of DJ's/Producers. From future hip hop and ghetto-tech through grime, acquacrunk and heavy bass to psychodelic electro. They are definitely on the fore-front of the boiling movement of West Coast and their live sets, meticulously prepared and performed, are legendary. They shared the stage with such names as Flying Lotus, The Glitch Mob, Kid 606, Bassnectar, Hudson Mohawke, Megasoid, Eliot Lipp, MSTRKRFT, Trackademics, Ghislain Poirier, Rustie, The Gaslamp Killer, Mochipet and tons of others. Lazer Sword also have a range of very good remixes in their portfolio: Robot Koch and Cerebral Vortex "Vortex Cookies", Hugg and Pepp's "Penguini", Larytta's - "You got nothing", Flying Lotus' - "Tea Leaf Dancer" to mention just a few.

The original Gucci Sweatshirt, produced in 2007, was one of the first tracks I've heard by Lazer Sword, similarly as many other people attracted to the strange sound of this SF duo at that time. It has become a kind of underground anthem. It burns holes in the listener's skull slowly but thoroughly with distorted and mutated acapella, sick synths and bleeps and blaps spread in high density over the track. Then comes a real rocking bomb, the Lazer Sword '09 Electro Remix of the original track. It's f...g mental, I'm sure Lazer Sword will slay the crowds with this shizzle at the Halloween party in Białystok. The synths and beat are more crispy and uptempo, a typical Lazer Sword roller.

B-side offers a fantastic Machine Drum (under a moniker of Neon Black) remix of Gucci Sweatshirt. Insane neon synths and infectious voice sample will definitely soak well in a dimly-lit clubs at 3 a.m. with the toughest dancers (your humble narrator definitely comes into this category). Jet Black is another ultra heavy joint with very very typical Lazer Sword synths and cut-up beats, forcing your head to nod like crazy. You definitely heard this one in some of their mixes. It grows and mutates and sick vocal makes it very unsettling. Which is exactly the way I like to digest music. Raw and straight-in-yer face. Overall, it's an essential purchase for anyone looking for future beats which can devastate dancefloors. I highly recommend this.

You can grabe the 12" at many places over the net. Here are just a few of them:

Lazer Sword in Klub Metro, Białystok, Poland 31 October 2009

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Helllazer party on Halloween with Lazer Sword in Klub Metro in Białystok, Poland on 31 October 2009. Be there, dressed up and in the mood for future brap beats served by two gentlemen who know how to rock hard. Lando Kal and Low Limit will definitely slay the house with their collage of hip-hop/grime/ glitch/ghetto/acquacrunk and much more. I'm uber stoked to meet them.

They will be supported by local bad boys playing dirty, glitchy, bass-heavy ghetto-tech shizzle: D Koola, Auricom,
Eh!Marine and Dizzy Trouble.

This is the party you cannot miss! The scariest Halloween crew will nail you hard with dirty electronic beats and heavy bass. This is the first visit of Lazer Sword to Poland. I hope they won't forget it for a long long time.

HUGG & PEPP - PENGUINI (LANDO KAL EDIT)

HUGG & PEPP - PENGUINI (LANDO KAL EDIT)

Darth Vader you stand no chance with the lazers of
Lando Kal !!! (1/2 of Lazer Sword together with Low Limit). He mashed a great synth-driven Penguini by Hugg & Pepp (Maximus EP released recently on Turbo Recordings). Actually, Hugg & Pepp are mighty acid techno kings from Sweden, better known as brother Dahlbacks and they really know how to produce a good shit. Lando Kal's trippy edit, full of fantastic lazer synths, cut-up voice samples, weird melodies and ass-kicking acepella, elevated Hugg & Pepp's music to another level. I can't wait to hear Lazer Sword dropping similar stuff at the gig at the end of October in Białystok. It's just 3 more weeks! Well, maybe I sound a bit too agitated, but you know, here in Central Europe we don't often have a chance to see such artists and this type of music is still a deep niche in Europe in general. Anyway, the boys still have some free slots on their tour timetable - check their myspace and don't miss such an opportunity.

Bonus: Listen to Low Limit's Turf Day, a new track to be released soon.

DRUMS OF DEATH - GOT YR THING (STARKEY REMIX)

TUNE OF THE WEEK:

DRUMS OF DEATH - GOT YR THING (STARKEY REMIX)

What a great remix of
Drums of Death! Starkey applies his well-known street bass manners, tweaking and distorting the already sharp synths thus creating an ultra heavy bass banger in which vocal goes hand in hand with tough bassline. Believe me, this track will get lots of publicity. Another surefire killer from Philly's Don!

HUMANLEFT - ROARR EP

HUMANLEFT - ROARR EP

1 Le Clap Rap

catalogue number: meow153
Label: Tigerbeat6
Release date: September

Yay! Gimme more, gimme more! Kid606's Tigerbeat loaded another banging shit to my e-mail. Another surprise as a matter of fact. Great gift for the International Translation Day (oh yes your humble humble narrator is the translator by education and profession). On his Roarr EP,
Humanleft aka Rémy Teruel melts and combines various music languages, that of pounding, bass-heavy glitch hop and wonky acquacrunk made in Glasgow with that of 'oh so famous' French electro 'Ed Banger' sound full of great synths and dancefloor-oriented beats. The final outcome of his translation is really stunning 4-piece of solid, extended and craftily wowen sonic texture. It's even difficult for me to mention some highlights as all these tunes, although varying among themselves, create a kind of unified block of music which should be digested in full.
